[OT]jasm580, that sounds worth looking into. Some computers do need a 2-3 day buffer so local settings will be needed anyway.[/OT]
I'll see if I can manage -not- to partake in th end-game then ![]() |

The latest batch I've recieved is 591. If the figure of 10 batches per week is still accurate, that means we still have 3+ weeks to go. Except that the batches are not released sequentially[Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 5, 2010 2:51:37 PM] |

NixChix, that could be a solution, but not with about 15 computers spread out over 25Km (15 miles) and 5 addresses. You are talking about almost a fulltime job finetuning for WCG. No can do. ![]() Sure you can. I have 18 computers (about 35 cores) and I only ever see 5 of them. Trick is when you install the client to be sure that you have not set any overides for the preferences locally so everything is controled from the web. I move computers between profiles all the time to control what they are working on. )Cheers ![]() ![]() |

Changing Research selection is instantaneous since it's merely a direct messaging from My Projects to the Feeders. Since a result report also does a device profile check, it's latest then that the client is told to pull a new global_prefs.xml update, so there's really no need to push any button. [not 100% on that, could also be when the Ready to Report is cleared], but totally agree, those with remote devices should clear local prefs, there being ways to create more than 4 web device profiles [Which takes us really off topic on an unsupported track]

I always force updates to make this method work since you need the update to download profile changes to the client. [snip] You don't have to force an update unless you have some task(s) suspended, or if BOINC is set to not download new tasks (but if set to not get new tasks, then it shouldn't matter what profile it's running anyway... the update would just make it report finished tasks). Or, if you want to observe it right then in the Messages tab that the change took effect, then you might force an update. But BOINC will change profiles ok the next time it checks in to download more WUs, without a 'forced' update. Hope that helps. ![]() |

Yes it is true that the profile changes will download to a client next time it checks in, you just won't know whwn it happens. The reason that I force an update is so the increased cache size would is downloaded after I change the project choice to the project that is difficult to get. The effect is that after I got the client to download a few project "A" WUs to keep it busy, I changed the profile so that the server will only feed it project "B" WUs. When the client gets the profile with the larger cache, suddenly it is real hungry for WUs and is ready to download whatever it can get (project "B").
----------------------------------------I suppose there are other ways to acheive that effect. You just don't want the cache to accidentally fill with non-preferred WUs. If you didn't have physical access to the client, you would just have to try real hard to create a mental image of what it is currently doing. Without seeing the message log it would be real hard to be sure when the profile changes have been loaded and recognized. Cheers ![]() ![]() |

NixChix, it's really not relevant because long as the client has no contact with the servers nothing changes in what's in your cache. There's one note though. When a contact is made, any work request goes before a prefs update transfer [because a work request or a result upload is the reason of the contact]. For size up purposes that's not of interest as the project selections are on the server, but for material size down it is. But how often does one do that?
