Background: I noticed today that I was unable to upload results since Feb 10 and I had no work, I downloaded and installed 6.2.28 and everything started to work fine but I notice now that I have 2 WCG icons in the systray. I right clicked one of the icons and exited it but that resulted in my system locking up when I tried to use it after the screen saver was activated the next time.
I just checked the process table and their are indeed 2 boincmgr.exe processes running. Does the install not check for BOINC already being in the start folder? |

In principle you can have as many BOINC Managers running as you like since it can connect to local and remote clients, but only 1 core client boinc.exe will load. Possibly the one remaining is one that did not connect properly to the core client which is when it starts to cause system sluggishness and more. Simply kill both the boincmgr.exe processes in taskmanager and start 1 manually. Delete the one in the startup folder or run msconfig.exe to disable the run command.
----------------------------------------It seems to happen occasionally, not the first time we read this, probably when the first install was not executed correctly or installed from a none admin authority... a guess. Certainly not experienced with the many tens of test installs I've done with the upcoming 6.10 client. BTW, when first time installing 6.2.28 upgrading from 5.10.45 a boot is requested to allow the special BOINC accounts to take effect.

PS to emphasize, there should be a boinc.exe process running, ideally as service so it loads even before you sign into a user session. Selecting the All User during the install ensures you've got user level access, without which there's a problem for the BOINC Manager to connect to the core client. Having admin rights overrides that limitation.

Thanks, I did reboot after the install and there is only one boinc.exe running.
But I think I know what else I did that might have had something to do with it... I actually stopped WCG before running the install/upgrade... so without it running the install probably threw another boincmgr into the startup. And I did go with all defaults during the install so it was running its own screen saver too, which I really didn't want to do and I have read not to run any screen saver to save cycles for WCG. Thanks for the info |
