After having crunched FAAH, what a disappointment with HCC. I went from an average of 798 points/WU with FAAH to 606 points/WU. This is destroying all my host averages on each device and my general overtake speed that was about #50 ranks per day stands now at #43 ranks per day and slowing. HCC is really like a big brake.
----------------------------------------It is a 25% loss in points production performance. HCC really does not make my day. Unfortunately I need the Sapphire, so I will keep suffering and crunching. Anyone knows why such a big difference in payout between FAAH and HCC. Is Aids research more urgent than cancer research. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Hypernova at Feb 27, 2010 4:19:16 PM] |

Hypernova,
----------------------------------------Think you need a 5 minute T time before shooting off the hip. Credit is per crunching hour, not per job and when lamenting getting only 798 points for an A Type DDDT2 job, those were credits, to be multiplied by 7 to get WCG points.

Sorry Sek.
---------------------------------------- The fault to that damn Boinc/WCG multiplier. Feel much better now for my DDDT2 job. ![]() ![]() |

As my whole systems crunches only one project at a time I can compare. I take the total daily number of WU returned and the total points awarded as it is displayed in the My Grid / Historical Statistics. I took the ration for FAAH and now for HCC. SO here I am right I suppose. ![]() |

It's a false comparison, you should take the points reported for a rig day divided by the average hours for a rig day. See chart and see that FAAH jobs run currently an average of 7.69 hours and HCC 5.4 hours. The hourly claim ratio should be identical until the client runs the benchmark again, every 5th day.

Sek can you please check if my understanding is good.
----------------------------------------When I switch projects say from FAAH to HCC. If I happen to switch just after the benchmark made with FAAH then I have to wait 5 days until a new benchmark takes place which will then adjust the rating for HCC WU. This means that I should run a benchmark (Advanced / Run CPU Benchmark function in Boinc manager) when my systems starts to crunch WU's of a new project. Then my daily number of points should be similar whatever the project (considering machines running 24/7). Is that right. ![]() |

The benchmark applies to all projects and is independent of any project that is run, for WCG or anywhere else. FAAH+HFCC are a bit quirky for they also run an invisible minitest with each new job taking momentary system loads into account. At any rate manually rerunning the benchmark is not needed, it varies just marginally unless you happen to be gaming e.g. Then you might see a poor benchmark and thus poor claims for the next 5 days (120 hours). And, even if the claim is poor, WCG still checks if these match your claim history and will correct the grant if deviating too much (Think when >30%).

Sek after having forced all the machines to benchmark, the day after, the daily points and results improved in a significative way. In the past I always noted that it took days before full performance was reached.
----------------------------------------It is worth then once switching all machines to a new project and when they start delivering the first unit to force benchmark on all of them and update. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Hypernova at Feb 26, 2010 11:31:01 PM] |

At the risk of restarting the old debate for the millionth time, please, please, remember we're doing this for the science, not the points. Personally I don't care too much about points, I'm more motivated by badges, but just because they remind me of my contribution to the projects. Points, badges and the rest of the stats are great for encouraging people to do more, to find that N+1 machine to crunch a bit more, but, and this is my humble opinion, they shouldn't become a reason for quit/dislike a specific project. Since I think that HCC is probably one of the most important projects on WCG, I'll crunch for it regardless of average points. Of course you're free to do whatever you like, I'll just ask you to please consider the importance of the project over the points it gives. Anyway you're one of the bigger contributors, so in any case whichever project you chose is well appreciated. |
