Virgin recently announced another UK hike in costs, effective from the 1st April 2010.
Monthly Line rental up by 99p - yes in the UK it will cost an additional 99p per month to have a 10m wire run from the house to the end of the street (cost of 10m telephone wire, about 60p) - Rip off Brittain Alert! Basic Internet up 50p - another attack by Virgin on the poor and struggling businesses. Package reduction (TV+Internet+phone) decrease by £1 - Virgin wants their presents back. This is on top of any telephone charge or Vat increases (up by 2.5%). That is £2.49 + the increase in Vat to the whole bill and phone call charges did go up within the last year. I have seen a huge reduction in Internet performance over the last 3years. As well as slow contention, they have been reducing our bandwidth from 10Mb to 2Mb during the day, sometimes down to 500Kb or even cut you off if you download more than 1.5GB (try upgrading to W7 over the Internet, watching streaming media or just installing all the updates required for an new operating system installation). They call this FAIR USAGE POLICY! In the UK you pay for something, dont get what you pay for, get legally fobbed off with dubious terms and conditions that you are not allowed to contest because of the existence of the obstacle Ofcom, and now get charged more! The waste of space that is Ofcom, the UKs supposed communication watchdog, were recently reported to have hired the same companies they are investigating as consultants to explain what is going on! So, the UK tax payers are now paying Ofcom, a government offshoot with limited powers and apparently no responsibility and Ofcom are using the tax to pay for consultants from the same companies they are investigating - sleeping with the enemy. I think it is fair to say that the number of UK crunchers might start dropping. If I went for a USB dongle rather than a land line, just used my mobile for calls and used freeview, I would save at least £400 a year, perhaps £600! I know several people that have already done this. However, such a change could interfere with crunching; some task file sizes, from various Boinc projects, are large. On top of normal Internet usage this could restrict participation. |

skgiven in Switzerland it is the same. I pay for a bandwith that I never get or only exceptionally. At certain times of the day (Internet Rush Hours you have a noticeable slow down.) In fact the contract mentions that it is not a guaranteed bandwith but as an estimated best effort. And as there are more and more users that gobble more and more bandwith through a lot of devices like I Phones and in the future I Pads things will become eventually even worse.

My area has 125% capacity. The ISP cant handle the load, but it still accepts new customers. They just uses legal jargon to justify reduced services, and then have a cheek to increase charges.
