Re: Installing in a school

Ommadawn , good luck with your setup. I understand that at the moment you will use the same user, in case you will use different users you can group them in team, and see team statistics.

Re: Installing in a school

Actually, if you become a WCG partner you can have multiple sub-teams under a single user and get personalized support from professionals, not amateur volunteers like me. Involving the pupils ** would set the seed ;>)

PS, Ommadawn, if you look in the cc_config.xml instructions you can set to prevent use of the new project attach function and also lock in the Simple View for additional control when allowing others to look into the interface and see the graphics.

<disallow_attach>1</disallow_attach>
<simple_gui_only>1</simple_gui_only>

Else, installing protected mode only should shield the installs.

Re: Installing in a school

Thank you all!

I'm testing it...

One question: I'm installing BOINC on linux computers, so I set a session autorun for run_client application (when I log in the system, BOINC begin to run). I've done in this way because I tryied to set it up in the /etc/profile file but, at rebooting, my system was so slow starting up, so I refuse to do it in this way.

Does anyone knows why this could happen to me? Using startup in the session... am I doing it in the right way of working with BOINC in linux?

Thanks!

Re: Installing in a school

For almost anything a solution, though I don't know if it works under Linux:

<start_delay>nseconds</start_delay>

where the delay for this cc_config.xml BOINC <options> function to start is in whole seconds. I've got it on 60 seconds... just enough to get quickest access to the computer.

Re: Installing in a school

Thanks Sekerob!

I've created the XML file in one server. This evening I'll try to copy it into the stundents computers and I'll tell you all.

One question, in the results status of the computer where I've copied the xml, appears "Detached" in two results. What does it mean? confused

Thanks!!

PS: Sekerob, you said you're not english speaker... If I must ask, where are you from? I'm Spanish

Re: Installing in a school

Ommadawn,

Detached is a state where a device had the WCG project detached whilst it still had work assigned, discussed in this FAQ: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=6105

I returned to planet Earth over half a century ago and had a hard landing. The VTO engines are broken since... as of then can only move [near] horizontal and in the course learned a few tongues to speak. Calling home has not worked so far, so fear I'll have to stay till my latter days and pester homo sapiens sapiens suffering under the weight of 1G alien 1

edit:

PS, there is a command you can execute remote instructions with the boinccmd tool http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Boinccmd_tool to force the reading of the new cc_config.xml files without the need to restart the client. It's

boinccmd --host 192.168.1.xxx --read_cc_config

I just tested this and it works from a command window [admin rights]. There's a sample how to do this for a group of devices in the wiki.

Re: Installing in a school

repost with correction:

added: when executing the cc_config.xml read you'll be seeing BOINC message log lines, confirming what has taken effect or what may have caused an error. These after the test:

3188 17-02-2010 10:28:02	Re-reading cc_config.xml
3189 17-02-2010 10:28:02 Re-read config file
3190 17-02-2010 10:28:02 Config: don't use coprocessors
3191 17-02-2010 10:28:02 Config: report completed tasks immediately
3192 17-02-2010 10:28:02 Config: ignoring NVIDIA GPU 0
3193 17-02-2010 10:28:02 log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task, checkpoint_debug, cpu_sched, dcf_debug
3194 17-02-2010 10:28:02 log flags: sched_op_debug

Re: Installing in a school

Thank you Sekerob!

I still haven't understood the meaning for "Detached" crying

Could you expain me it with another words?

Am I doing anything wrong? All of my students computers are returning "detached" in their results... This evening I'll configure the XML file and maybe it will be ok, maybe...

Thanks

Re: Installing in a school

It means that the client had WCG no longer as a project listed. Then upon re-attaching, the previous assigned work gets invalidated.

You should not be cloning the clients if that's what you're doing. Only copy the specific cc_config.xml... you're not using re-imaging software of any kind such as deep-freeze i.e. the client getting removed/replaced including the data_directories periodically?

If you post a copy of one of these client's stdoutdae.txt file we can read the messages and provide an informed opinion.
