You could just try some other (newer) version, as they usually work fine. Don't uninstall the previous version, just upgrade it.

Others seem to use 64-bit ver. 6.10.18 with windows seven. So the problem shouldn't be with the version of client.

WCG FAQ
How do I upgrade to the latest supported version of the BOINC Software? You may upgrade to the latest version of the World Community Grid software by visiting https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewDownloadAgain.do The World Community Grid software will be downloaded for: Windows ® (6.2.28) (Vista, XP, Me, 2000) If you'd like to download the software for a different operating system, click here. Linux (6.2.15) (x86) (Apple) Mac (6.2.18) (PowerPC, x86) so the 64 bits ver 6.10.18 work's fine but not with WCG ![]() |

Who said/says? Is there not an item on the FAQ index speaking about 64 bit clients, section 3?

so the 64 bits ver 6.10.18 work's fine but not with WCG ![]() Wrong. It works fine, also for WCG. I am operating BOINC 6.10.18 on a Quad under Vista 64. There are no 64bit work units for the WCG projects yet, but the 64bit client works fine for me. Greetings roundup |

There's something about the migratory path when going from 32 to 64 bit client, but it should not loose you anything if paying attention during the options settings in the installer and make a backup of old data and restore before connecting BOINC to the project servers. You can even boot dual boot between 32 and 64 bit (of same OS family), long as you only run 32 bit science applications.
----------------------------------------The fact that you needed to choose WCG indicates that you did not point the installer properly at the old data_dir place, that's obvious. At any rate, from 6.2 the data_dir should no longer be in the program files structure... the old likely still there. From 6.2 it's in fact no longer possible (hmmm) should not be possible to install the data_dir as a subdir to C:\Program Files\BOINC or C:\Program Files (x86)\BOINC edit: inserted the hmmm reservation

There is one possible problem you can hit when switching from 32-bit to 64-bit, but I'm not sure if this only happens if you uninstall your old client before upgrading, or if it can happen regardless... Also, don't remember if this only happens if you've upgraded from v5.xx.xx to v6.2.xx or not...
----------------------------------------Atleast as a work-around, would expect this method would work: 1: Just to be on the safe side, exit your v6.2.xx-client, making sure BOINC has stopped (use task manager to verify). 2: Install a 32-bit version of BOINC, it shouldn't matter if this is v6.6.xx or v6.10.xx, and AFAIK doesn't matter if you've uninstalled your old BOINC-client beforehand or not. 3: In the 32-bit version, verify by running it that old data moved correctly. 4: Stop BOINC, and uninstall the 32-bit version. 5: Install a 64-bit version, v6.10.18 (or later). This method should AFAIK also work if you're upgrading from an old v5.xx.xx-client, atleast as long as it's installed to the default directory, c:\program files (x86)\boinc Another work-around would be to move the files manually... ![]() "I make so many mistakes.
