Re: This is for bbover and the IBM guys ..

But part of me believes that if and when they do find a cure, it won't come out totally because there is NO money to be made in cures.crying
As it has been explained in other threads several times, the "free" part we do (building knowledge bases, in general) is only the very first step of a long, dificult and expensive drug development process. There is still much billable added value to put on top of our results before being able to put a new drug on the market.

I think that what matters more for big companies is the size and the wealth of the target population. If we can contribute to bring the threshold lower, fine for me.

Lot's of entries and odds so we'll make sdo with a dualie and no matter if it beats the Intels or is second to them it will do it's bit of work and cut down the timeframes needed till we find the cures.

Thats the most important part. But part of me believes that if and when they do find a cure, it won't come out totally because there is NO money to be made in cures. The governments want to keep the money machine churning which is so sad because of greed! crying

Just for the sake of argument lets say that tomorrow we find the breaktrough that leads to the cure for cancer.
Some abstract combination of proteins or what have you that are why one family tree never get cancer.
Then you have to figure out how to replicate this in a way to help people.
My guess is many millions of $$ involved in that process.
Someone has to pay for that time and money spent and thats all of us.
Better to have a $1000.00 pill available than no pill at all true?
I watched my Grandmother die of cancer back in the late 60's and I'll be totally honest with you. I'd give anything I have or will ever have not to have seen her go through that.
I remember watching my Father who had survived 5 years in the Pacific in WW2 cry like a child at the frustration of not being able to do anything for her.
We all have our motivators in what we do here and thats one of mine.
I don't begrudge a company making money from this, just that it gets done.

Re: This is for bbover and the IBM guys ..

I don't have a problem with a company making a profit for a cure provided they don't string it out over years when they could have done it right away. Business is business. They are in business to make money. My hope for these projects are for them to succeed. Also to show proof that donating our computers time makes a difference. I'll be here as long as I'm alive and able to afford it. Just wish I could afford your system you have MM. Hopefully in a few months, I will get close though. Just have to make up my mind on who to go with, AMD or Intel. Part of me wants to go AMD with a 4 socket system but then I think about your system and want to go with intel. d oh

Honestly, follow hypernova's lead with the single socket Intel machines with the top 6 core chip you can afford..

Also these arrived at the house today:

I was hoping for the 6174's but hey, you take what is sent and say thanks.
Will build a heck of a machine from it.

Re: This is for bbover and the IBM guys ..

Well we have the first comparison:

1x5680 = 19.98 GHz = 1663$
1x6168 = 22.80 GHz = 744$

Did you get heatsinks with the MC CPUs? I have seen several pictures of G34 boads and seem to have just two attachement points per CPU, is it right?

Please don“t forget to get a kill a watt :)

regards

Sometimes you have to take a stand in life on what you beleive in.
This childish game that goes on here with ErikaT has pushed me a bit too far.
ErikaT, you have a decision to make and I suggest you take it up with the people above you.
The next time you edit one of my posts and say it's for profanity making me look like I'm swearing on this forum when I am not I will pull my machines from this project, ask the Xs team to do the same and then go to every team I know and ask the same.
Now I don't make this decision lightly but lady you have royally pissed me off.
Enough is enough.
I am not some child for you to abuse your CA powers with.

Edit: After 5 mins to cool off and think this over I've decided that this project is too important to me but at the same time I'm not going to sit idly by and have my name tossed into the gutter by some woman or anyone else who is so thin skinned that the word used by me offends them.
There is only one simple answer to this and thats for me not to post here while this thinking is in place.
ErikaT, I hope your now happy. You've driven away someone whose only fault is that I like to share the info on the new hardware and perhaps educate people as to what makes for the best choices.
Sayonara!

MM, Will you compare one project at a time on each system?

Would be interesting to see if there was an task preference given the different architectures. I expect there will be, but just how much?
