Re: Unexpected pause and error.

I experience the same error on a powerful 16 core AMD server. Coincidently it only occurs only when I try to crunch RICE on it and all other projects run just fine.

Access Violation (0xc0000005) at address 0x7D621FB5 read attempt to address 0x00000138

Re: Unexpected pause and error.

evilkats,

If you give us more specifics we might be able to give pointer how to work around, if there's a workaround.

-Client version?
-OS?
-Message Log from time around when a fail occurred?
-Result log in full?
-How long job runs when fell occurs with all your RICE?

Re: Unexpected pause and error.

Hi Sekerob,

Here is the information you have requested. Jobs started at the same time and failed shortly after, seemingly simultaneously. This error reminds me of the first BETA attempts months ago for a Beta - Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together - Phase 2, at least the Access Violation part and its number. I appreciate any help on this issue, I am able to switch to other projects on this server, unlike other people who reported this problem.

Thank you,
EvilKats

Re: Unexpected pause and error.

Nasty line there covered in a Start Here FAQ:

- exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005)

with strong suggestion that the system is somehow, somewhere having an instability.

Client version... I've never been able to run RICE successfully on one XP duo device using the 6.2, so when 6.10 came around it did the trick. Else always reverted to the quadruple install 5.10.45 (different releases all pointing to same data_dir). It then too magically would run RICE properly.

PS: Yes, that is the typical case... failing on the first checkpoint write, minutes into the job...within the first few seeds computed.

Re: Unexpected pause and error.

Sekerob,

I can definitely rule out overclocking or general system instability. This is a 24/7 SQL Server server an I restart it at most once a month if I ran windows updates. I let BOINC crunch for only 12 hours at night, so it won't slow down anything. I can't rule out corrupt BOINC client, or old system drivers. I am kind of weary of hardware updates on a server which sits miles away @ the data center. When the next approved edition of BOINC from WCG comes out, I'll install it, but by then RICE project may be over anyway.
I am fortunate to have access to such powerful server even for a little while, to make world a better place for everybody. It is successfully crunching Help Fight Childhood Cancer and I'll leave it at that. Again, thank you for your help in keeping support threads active.

Sincerely,
EvilKats

Re: Unexpected pause and error.

Try 5.10.45 as that is an approved WCG version. 6.2.19 is not, well it could not be as WCG only issues 32 bit clients to go with their 32 bit sciences ;>)

edit: System instability could be also in the system/hd permissions realm. I've always thought these HPF2 and RICE crap-outs within the first 2 minutes is somewhere there.

Re: Unexpected pause and error.

The Rice Project always crashes on my (very old) AMD XP machine. I get numerous windows error boxes and then it crashes windows requiring a hard reboot. No problems now or historically with WCG

Re: Unexpected pause and error.

Within 2 minutes or so? Yes, some clients do display this behavior. Can only recommend to disable the science in your My Grid > My Projects or Device profile if you have more computers running WCG.

Re: Unexpected pause and error.

My Video card (GeForce 6200 350 Mhz 2D/3D Core, 256 RAM DDR2-266) was a little over-clocked, so I reset it to normal parameters and I'll try to run a Rice project again, since I disabled it from the project list in WCG website device profile.

I don't remember having problems with Rice project like this one.

I'll post running results.

Edit: I'm using Client 6.10.18 and works OK except that it doesn't updates the progress on system tray icon properly but that is a minor glitch. I have finally engaged a Rice WU and no errors at all, smooth crunching so far on all active projects. I'll give another update once this client has finished a few RIce WUs.

Update: Yes is all back to normal, the client has finished several Rice WUs and is all smooth as silk :)

Re: Unexpected pause and error.

I'm running WCG version 6.2.28 on a number of PCs - a mix of XP pro & Vista - PC specs range from single 1.8GB AMD to Quad 2.4GB Intel.
They were all running smoothly until around Nov 2009 then the Rice WU's kept failing, so I eventually abandoned the project last month in favour of Cancer Research.
Is it worth me updating the Clients ? & if so which version has so far been most stable?
