Hey all,
Im a new user and I think that the most important project that can save us all is some kind of a world community grid computational project that can increase computational power of a microprocessor. That way, its like compound interest, we invest computational power in order to get more of it, in an exponential scale. Maybe some kind of random generator of nano-structures that with the least possible energy can generate the highest computational power possible? Or quantum computing atomic structures? Looking forward to your feedback! ![]() |

Was it something in the Scandinavian or German Press as you're the second in 24 hours who's coming to WCG with this as a project. Could not be... Conflict of Interest and more. See http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,28277

I swear it was self-inspiration.
Read the thread and I believe we could eliminate conflict of interests by putting a contract between IBM and the Users stating that all discoveries made in this field are of public domain and cant be privately patented however, being of public domain, they can use the knowledge to manufacture faster processors. Or we could make our own P2P massive computational open source and free software, the advent of P2P wireless internet can also help with that, since it wont be necessary to have centralized servers to share internet connections, adding more machines to help us with massive processing tasks. |

I had also similar thoughts. After all new computing technologies like quantum, optical, molecular and other types of computers may contribute indirectly to the humanity by solving problems much faster.
----------------------------------------As an electrical engineer with a master in computer science I would be very happy about it. But we must be careful not to mix things. The problem is that WCG is not the right place for it. Here we use whatever is available to directly solve urgent scientific problems of a specific type that are adressed by the research community and not to develop new machines for it. The only interest we could see for IBM is to create a positive image by financially supporting WCG. But I completely agree to such an approach when it is for the benefit of all. If you look at the hundreds of millions that are spent yearly by large corporations to advertise for cars, detergents, perfumes etc.. then I would be happy that they'd put 0.001% of their ad budget to support initiatives like WCG or why not to improve computers ![]() ![]() |

You're giving IBM ideas and all for free. They already contribute tens of thousands of devices to projects of WCG... they could easily do (and companies already do it), create their own IBM-DCG and do the very thing, who knows they're doing it already :P

Although more outside ideas are always welcome I think that IBM have what they need regarding Research and Development in these areas without risking any allegations of conflict of interest for WCG.
---------------------------------------- This is the 16th consecutive year IBM has led in U.S. patents. IBM used the occasion to announce plans to help stimulate innovation and economic growth. The company plans to increase by 50% -- to more than 3,000 -- the number of technical inventions it publishes annually instead of seeking patent protection. This will make these inventions freely available to others. |

If the findings are of public domain, the ideas are not only for IBM but for everyone including their competition. Heck, they might even pay you to enter a "private grid" of their own. The price of microprocessors will drop and their power will increase dramatically. More processing power = more advances for humanity.

You're now here 2 days and have no device registered to the name or a result returned. Do you need help to get started on doing some humanitarian crunching ;?
----------------------------------------edit: stats link ekoldo As for a project, WCG does not create them, they host them as an philanthropic effort, so if you know, maybe a university based research project that is into higgs or boson computing and it meeting the requirements of WCG and of the few hundred thousand WCG contributing members who'd not be endlessly questioning why this is hosted on WCG, who knows might there be a way.

Those projects are not World Community Grid projects so you will not see their statistics on this site.
