confused How can I report completed tasks?

Hello,
my laptop already has a number of tasks completed. The status is always there: it can be uploaded and the report now. But how can I report completed tasks? Thanks for your responses.

Re: How can I report completed tasks?

They are reported automatically when the next connection between WCG server happens. Then boinc client also downloads new work for you. You can also do this all manually from Advanced view, but that is not necessary.

Thank you for you answer. But what does the expiry date that is the date on which the tasks are sent back? How can I send back the completed tasks manually?

Thank you for your help.

Re: How can I report completed tasks?

There are a number of ways that BOINC returns results - predominantly when it requests more work. Others include;
1) If the WU is "Ready to report" (the actual data is sent back as soon as the computations have been completed and there's a valid connection), and has been for 24 hours,
2) If it's within 24 hrs of it's deadline,
3) There are a few more, although I can't just recall them at this point blushing

As to how to return them manually, go into BOINC (Advanced view), select the Projects tab, highlight the World Community Grid project, and then press the Update button.

Re: How can I report completed tasks?

You should not worry the deadlines unless they become a problem for you. In My grid (web) there's Results status. So if results start to appear as "too late", then you probably want to take actions. Otherwise everything's ok.

The reason for not sending all the work immediately back to the server is the BOINC client's Additional work buffer. If this buffer is set to zero, then you basically exchange work units that are ready to a new ones.

Re: How can I report completed tasks?

Hi nutella08!
As explained in the previous posts you should not normally worry about the deadlines for "Ready to Report" jobs: as long as your BOINC client can connect to internet at least once per day no completed task should miss its deadline. If it is connected more or less permanently as for many users there is really no reason to worry at all.

You should not use the Update button of the Projects tab unless exceptionally. The reason for BOINC working this way (reporting completed jobs together with requesting new ones) is that these operations trigger rather intensive activity on the main database of the servers, and grouping several of these operations at the same time allows to considerably decrease this overhead and thus decrease the workload of the servers.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: How can I report completed tasks?

Hello nutella08,
After reading through this thread, I think that an important point has not been explained to you. When a unit is marked "Ready to Report", it means that the work unit has been completed and returned. It is all finished!

However, there is a report to send to the Scheduling Server that will initiate a very time consuming data base operation. Since this is not a money-making corporate sales site, the project scientists try to minimize the number of servers on their budget. So they use your computer to consolidate the reports for several completed units and send back a report at least once a day. The data base operation takes about the same time to run on the server if it is handling a dozen reports from a quad CPU or only one report from a Pentium 4.

I wish that "Ready to Report" was stored in a separate tab rather than placed in TASKS. Everybody is initially confused by "Ready to Report".

You have the "Show active tasks" in v6.10.xx-clients, if you select this you won't see the "Ready to report"-tasks.
