Please look in your message log, start up part for the Data_dir line. That's the place you have to backup, when BOINC has been fully stopped. When reinstalling, first restore the data, then point the installer to the right data_dir location. Do this off-line until you're sure your client has found the data, else if the client manages to talk to the servers, you might find all work not found gets invalidated.
