Re: "got 0 new tasks"

Fredski,

Thanks for the tip but that's not the problem... The chart in the "Tasks" tab only shows the current task, and the next one in que.... My additional work buffer is set at 6 days.

My original post is here:

https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,28170#262539

Perhaps I've posted to the wrong thread - Suggestions? smile

Re: "got 0 new tasks"

If you look at C:\ProgramData\BOINC\slots there is a folder for each task you have downloaded. do not see a way to limit view of tasks in the manager, are you sure that you have more than the 2? most tasks are multiable files each. What arre you showing as time to completion? My older boxes typically take 60-74 hrs for HCC, with 2 of them, that is close to 6 days

Re: "got 0 new tasks"

Two Left Feet,
To make sure and also to convince you that you are seeing all tasks in the task list go to your Result Status page and set the filters to this device name and to "In Progress". It will show you everything you should find in BOINC's tasks list for this device.

And if you find the same small number of tasks (hopefully) it's probably that fredski's comment about large esrimated durations is true.
I am assuming from your first post that this machine runs 24/7. Is this right?

If none of these guesses (fredski's and mine) explains the situation correctly please restart BOINC and post the beginning of this machine's message log, from the "Starting BOINC..." line down to the first "Restarting task ..." line.

Read you later. Jean.

PS: Since you run version 6.2.28 of BOINC you can ignore Snow Crash's answer: it is related to more recent versions (6.10.xx).

Ahh. In Progress only shows two task.
And if you find the same small number of tasks (hopefully) it's probably that fredski's comment about large esrimated durations is true.

The average run time for the tasks completed on this machine over the past few days is under 7 hours.
I am assuming from your first post that this machine runs 24/7. Is this right?

Yes.

That's been a great help! Now it seems to me that BOINC is not fetching tasks to fill my "Additional Work Buffer" (currently set at 6 days.) I don't understand that because the current task is estimated to be completed in 45 minutes for a total time of 6.5 hours, and the pending task has an estimated time to complete of 6.5 hours.

I have a dial up connection... I (we) are losing a bit of crunching between the end of a task and the next time I log on.

I've included the portion of the log from this machine below.

Thanks for your help! Bruce

Re: "got 0 new tasks"

Thank you for your feedback.
So, obviously we have a scheduling problem with the client in this machine.

I see this line in your message log "Reading preferences override file" which means that you are using or you have used the local preferences from BOINC Manager.
As long as this file exists all its parameters are taking precedence on any similar parameter in the Default website profile that this machine is using.

So the first thing to clarify is if you have set your extra work buffer to 6 days in the local preferences or in your Default profile.
If it is in the Default profile the solution is simple: either enter the same parameters in your local preferences if you want to go on using this file, or simply delete the local preferences by clicking the "Clear" button in the upper right corner of that window.

If I am again on a wrong track please include in your next post the following paameters
- Connect every x.xx days
- Extra work buffer x.xx days
- Switch applications every xxxx minutes
from both your Default profile and your Local Preferences.

Read you later. Jean.

Re: "got 0 new tasks"

I'm running on standard settings and I just think my computer might have crunched so much it's run out of tasks, as Bonic really runs almost full time apart from overnight and it's been returning several tasks a day but to have no work at present is a little annoying.

-- Problem solved telling to clear local settings and use standard preferences seems to have fixed it for me again --

Extra work buffer 6.0 days Local Prefs, every 3.0 days Default Profile (I reset my local prefs after clearing the file earlier)
Switching applications every 60 minutes Local Prefs, every 60 minutes Default Profile

(I do have "Custom Profile" selected on the online Device Profile page...)

Thanks!, Bruce

Re: "got 0 new tasks"

Bruce,
I am afraid we are facing a particular behaviour linked to the dial up connection because your settings seem OK although your local settings mean a total work buffering of 1 + 6 = 7 days of work which might "worry" your client's scheduler.
I will ask you to try a few things for better localizing where the problem is and eventually refill your task queue until we find the cause precisely.

Could you please try the following:
1. In your local preferences
- keep "Connect" at 1.0 day
- decrease the "Extra work buffer" to 1 day.
2. Make sure you are connected and force an "Update".

If the total size of your desired buffer is the problem you might already receive two days of work in several consecutive downloads.

If this operation is not successful, keep the previous settings unchanged and
3. keep the line active
4. select Activity->Network activity always available
5. force an Update if downloads are not starting spontaneously.

If still not successful, keep the previous settings unchanged and
6. select Activity->Run always
7. force an Update if necessary.

After that I really think that you should have got some more tasks queued, which will give you some relief for keeping BOINC active. In that case, depending on which step unlocked the situation we will know which set of settings must be investigated more deeply.

If nothing better has happened I will have to be more imaginative and/or hope that retsof who is or has been working in dial up mode for long will see this thread and bring his experience in the game. smile

Good luck. Jean.

Done and done, still requesting 0 seconds of work

I don't suspect the dialup situation is an issue, as the machine along with 3 others have been in this mode for several years...

Before my last task ended, I selected "No New Tasks" from the Projects tab.

I cleared my "Local Preferences" and changed the online Default Device profile from Custom to Maximum

Using wcg_boinc_6.2.28_windows_intelx86.exe I first tried to repair my installation with no luck. Next I uninstalled the software then reinstalled, and am still unable to fetch work (yes, Allow New Tasks is selected).

Explorer shows the date of the setup file as 1/18/2009. I assume that is the date it was downloaded. confused

I suppose my next step is to search the forums for how to do a really clean install of the software to get a fresh start. It may be a day or two before I get to that..

Thanks again for your help, Bruce

Good luck. Jean.
