I forgot to post this back when we ran out of IADS WU.
Assume that all my profiles are set to the same configuration and all changed at the same time. I had my profile set to IADS only and 2 days buffer. When that project ran out of work I needed to change the profile but didn't get to it until I had exhausted all WU. So I go into my profile change and the project to HCC and at the same time change the buffer size to .1 days. The next time I look, I see that I have 2 days of HCC WU downloaded. So BOINC saw that I had changed my profile to a new project, but it did not acknowledge that I had changed the buffer. Gotta be a bug. |

The client asks for more work before it processes the new profile config (I have spent way too much time watching "Messages" :-)
I think your clients were starving so when they asked for more work (still based on the two day buffer) a boatload got queued up and in the middle of that procees the cache size change made it into your client config so BOINC Manageer finally stopped asking for more but still downloaded what was already queued. |

The project selection does not have to be communicated to the client, so the distributors had instantaneous knowledge that if this client wanted to talk, they'd be served right away. If the first X seconds work call did not fully fill the buffer, given there is a 15 WU per request max, I'd imagine there would not be a subsequent request, there being a 9 or 11 second bounce, something to that order.
----------------------------------------Yes, an interesting observation and time to stop watching... BOINC does not like it... it's AI, without singularity (word of the week). edit: between the projects/profile change and the communication there could still be quite a bit of time unless one hits the update button.

and time to stop watching I go to work everyday and sleep every night so I really only watch when I am micromanaging, switching clients, OS, projects, etc... OK, yes, I should stop ![]() |

given there is a 15 WU per request max, I'd imagine there would not be a subsequent request, there being a 9 or 11 second bounce, something to that order. So we only get a max of 15 WU before the buffer change gets processed, even if we were changing from 8 days to .1between the projects/profile change and the communication there could still be quite a bit of time unless one hits the update button. But even if you do hit update quickly, the fact that the project change was communicated immediately means the download of (possibly) 15 WU has already started.Seems that you have to change the buffer locally and Update each computer, then change the profile online. Bit of a bother, but I now know. |

for me it seems to only make a difference when I make big drops in cache size/ project selection at the same time. Other than that the changes happen pretty smoothly. Another option for micromanaging would be to toggle new tasks off, update website, update client and toggle new tasks back on.
