I read that Windows 7 is suppose to use the gpu power to compute when the cpu is maxed out. Wouldn't this mean that it uses the gpu to help run BOINC?

I'm pretty sure Windows 7 does not GPU for CPU processing.
WCG definately does not. Can you provide a link to your source? |

W7 offloading to the GPU? Yes I've read that too, but how it does that, if it does that, I don't know... certainly I'd expect that to require the newest newest hardware and not laptops that have silly stickers on them that say "W7 ready"when they barely can handle the starter kit.
----------------------------------------One thing to say for W7-64 bit, the WCG graphics for RICE on my desktop looked superior compared to when running under Vista-32 bit when I put in the profile to allocate 10% CPU time for 30 frames per second... more surprisingly my OS upgraded Vaio laptop is racing under W7 (after major driver hacking on multiple fronts) :D

I did a little research myself. Here's the deal ... Microsoft added an api for Windows 7 DirectX 11 which in theory makes it easy for programmers to write code that can use either the CPU or the GPU for different parts of their applications. Windows does not do anything directly to effect this interaction and the only place I see this actually being used is in video transcoding. Until the science apps on WCG are re-coded to it won't make a difference for crunching.
