I've just recently bought a new Sony Vaio laptop with Windows 7, and re-downloaded the software so I could still run projects. However, since then my computer regularly crashes - a blue screen appears saying that a stack has overflowed, then Windows is restarted.
I didn't know what was causing this but since I stopped the BOINC software, it has never happened since, so it seems like that is the cause. Anyone got any ideas? If not I will reluctantly have to remove the software as it is causing a lot of inconvenience at the moment. |

How are the system temperatures? No obstructions of the air in-outlets? Monitor with utils such as CoreTemp.
----------------------------------------The BOINC tool TThrottle allows to set a ceiling temp and is permanently running on my laptop. Summer I get about 50%, winter about 90% off the idle cycles to go to BOINC. This is while sitting on a Notepal which has 3 fans build in (which I can't hear).

In addition to Sekerob's suggestions:
----------------------------------------Without a great deal more detail I can’t offer any specific suggestions but based on my own experience over the last 2 years and from what I’m seeing in the forums the problem is not BOINC under Win 7. My best guess is that there is a problem with a device driver or a hardware failure that is being triggered by BOINC because of it driving the machine at a much high rate than what you would normally do on the PC. Again, based on my best estimate the problem is one waiting to happen no matter if you are running BOINC or not. BOINC will cause it to trigger more often but even if you remove the software the problem will continue. I have BOINC (6.2.28) running on 2 Win 7 machines, Ultimate RC1 and retail Pro without problem and I’ve seen a number of postings by people running Win 7 and no others reporting this problem. My suggestions are: If you have any Vendor supplied diagnostics try running them with out any other processes running. See if you can find anything in the Event Log that indicates what is triggering the BSOD Not necessarily related but good practice to follow: If you are not running the WCG supported version of BOINC change to that version. Make sure you have BOINC installed to it’s own folder(s), not the Program Files system folder (I use C:\BOINC\Pgm and C:\BOINC\Data). Exclude the BOINC folder(s) from AV scan Turn off the BOINC screen saver (I use Advanced View->Accessible View) Bill P
