Download multiple work units

I've noticed that my WCG client is often sitting idle simply because it's finished working on the work unit it downloaded and is now waiting to go online and download another. If the clients downloaded several work units and "topped up" whenever they were online and had finished some of them, they could be kept constantly working, thereby eliminating the idle time. I suspect this would give as much as a 100% improvement in the rate at which units are completed by some clients.

Re: Download multiple work units

Richard --

This has been discussed in here before. Check out the thread at the link that mycrofth points to in his note below and see the recommendations made by Rick Alther, one of the WCG developers.

note to self -- don't try to post to two different forums at the same time d oh

Re: UD Monitor

I believe that Dave is referring to this post by Rick Alther: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=1108#5103

UD Monitor has some complications that are discussed more thoroughly in the forum over on http://www.grid.org/

Re: UD Monitor

We recommend that you not use these multiple workunit download tools. This often turns out to be counterproductive. The servers may conclude your machine has dropped off the grid, and then the work gets sent to other machines. Meanwhile, your device may be working on older data which has already been completed by other machines.
