Just curious....project variations

Always wondered.......

Why do some projects stress a rig more than others?
Given that 100% load is 100% load shouldn't things always be more or less equal?

Yet project A can run like 2c cooler than project B.

What would be the reason?

Stresses on the subsystem eg more ram usage, paging to disc etc?

No big deal but have often wondered about it.

Just switched from one project to another to run cooler overnight....almost instant 2c temp reduction.

If you look at the architecture of processors you will see that they consist of many different specialized units. If a processor is fully busy running instructions which use only a few simpler units it will be cooler that if they use the most demanding ones.

vaio, I see as much as 6C difference depending on the project and how many are running of that at the same time, with SpeedFan running to pump up the ventilation. That's why a tool like TThrottle (32/64bit) is ideal if you have a max temp in mind at which you wish BOINC to slow down. Permanently running on my laptop.

Often enough the request was made to not allow more than X instances of a science to run concurrently. 4, 8, 12 of the same is not the most efficient at that. Close observations will reveal that a mix of different feature using sciences often produces more throughput.

cheers
