Who Can Call this Justice

Suspect in Chilean Student Murders Declared Incompetent

Thursday morning in Walton County court, Dannie Roy Baker, 60, was declared incompetent to stand trial. A competency exam was ordered during the last pre-trial hearing in August and the results were filed in late October.
Baker is charged in the deaths of two Chile students, Racine Balbontin Argandona and Nicholas Pablo Corp Torress, that were working in Walton County here on work visas. Three other Chile students were injured.
The shootings happened around 2:00 a.m. on February 26, 2009 at the Summer Lake Town Home Development on Scenic Gulf Road. Authorities say 14 friends were gathered at the home when Baker, a neighbor, fired shots in the window.
Baker was indicted in March on two counts of first degree premeditated murder with a firearm, three counts of attempted first degree murder with a firearm and one count of shooting into a building.
The State Attorney’s Office was seeking the death penalty in the case but now Baker may never go to trial. Baker will be taken to the Florida State Hospital where he will continue to be evaluated by their forensic unit.

I am sorry to hear that and have long thought that anyone that is declared insane and unfit for trial should be held until they are sane and then tried! Waaay too many people try this and then end up walking the streets after a few years! The guy who shot Ronald Reagan did the same thing, his parents tried to get him released into their custody after only 3 years. I believe he is now out and roaming the streets of the World a free man!

Very sad. There are some people who should be locked up forever. No matter what we do we can not bring back those who were harmed, but we can make it so that person can never do this again.

My condolences

I do believe there are people in this World that can be helped thru drugs to live full and productive lives. The only problem I have is what do we do with those people that can be helped but do something bad before we can get them on the drugs? I am not saying that is the case here, I have no idea or way to know that. But what if he can be helped, what if he can be a CEO of some socially important company by just taking some medication? Is he responsible for what he did when he wasn't taking his meds? Honestly I say yes IF he was prescribed the drugs before he did the deed and wasn't taking his meds, but if he was never prescribed the drugs and they do in fact help, I just don't know. The family involved can never recover what they have lost! They have now gone thru a parents worst nightmare, the loss of a child! Even if they have another child, the one lost cannot be recovered, its potential for mankind is lost forever! We can do nothing but offer our prayers and sorrow for them. For the person that did this, the questions are many.

You have hit on a good point. Medications. Finding the one or ones which work and then getting the person to always take them once they are found. There is also the problem of side effects, which can be benign or horrific, depending on the person. In fact, the side effects are one of the reasons some people who need the medications refuse to take them. The medications are a valuable tool in the helping those with mental illness problems, but they are not a panacea to cure all of the ills.
