Controlling Concurrent Proccess on New HP 7i Laptop w Windows 7 [Resolved]

Just got a new hp 7i laptop with windows 7. added to my member list and found when I added this laptop to my team and downloaded software to laptop, the first thing that happened was 8 processes downloaded at same time to laptop. Now even though I have a quad core on my laptop and it appears to scream though boinc processes, don't know if I will be using my laptop enough (which will primarily be used for four small businesses I run) to get 8 processes done in the 10 day limit. I've tried to set up a special profile for this laptop and try adjusting some limits to see if I can get to down to having only 4 processes downloaded at one time and running to sync up with the number of cores I have without success so far. Is there a parameter (or combo of parameters) in the profile I can set so that I can limit the number of processes on my laptop to four at a time so I can make sure everything will get through and process by the 10-day limit????

go to the profiles and look for the "On multiprocessors, at most use: x processores."
Aplly and then use the update button on the manager.

While telling it you have less cores that you actually do is one way to manage how much work is on your PC, the setting that was intended to help you do exactly that is the "Additional Work Buffer" if you are using the local preferences. If you use the website to manage you machines it is the "Cache ... extra days of work. (same setting just called different names).

After a few days BOINC will have a good idea of how much you are crunching per day and will only send you as much work as you have set the cache to pull.

Hello Snow Crash,
The 'Additional Work Buffer' only affects how many extra work units are stored on the disk waiting to run. To reduce the number of work units running simultaneously, rbotterb should take falconet's advice and set "On multiprocessors, at most use: X processors" to some small number less than the 8 that it currently runs.

go to the profiles and look for the "On multiprocessors, at most use: x processores."
Aplly and then use the update button on the manager.

And while you are there also set
On multiprocessors, use: 50 % of processors
which is the normal parameter for recent versions of BOINC.
If you are not running WCG's version 6.2.28 (and you have forgotten to tell us which version you have installed) the "On multiprocessors, at most use: 4 processors" parameter will be ignored.

Good luck and happy crunching. Jean.

Yes, I am guilty of reading the problem and offering a different solution. Even if you queue up 10 days immediatley (before correction factor kicks in) BOINC will figure it out fairly soon and adjust the amount of work accordingly. Limiting the number of processors cuts down on how much can be crunched in total as you will only be using 4 cores ... ever and you loose out on the other 4 cores even if the machine is completely idle. I also don;t think that an i7 would not be able to crunch at least 1 WU per core every ten days so don;t see the harm in letting it rip when it can :-)

Re: Controlling Concurrent Proccess on New HP 7i Laptop w Windows 7

Thanks for the information. I did cut down my number of processors to 4 and that is triming down the number of processes waiting now.

Not sure on the version I'm running, but since I downloaded the software to my laptop the evening of 11/12 its probably the latest and greatest available.

i7 seems to be crunching through what is there reasonably fast - some got done as little as 1 1/2 hours, a few others after around 6 hours. Since I was spending some time moving some business files from my old desktop to my laptop for my new businesses this past weekend, the overhang of intial processes on my laptop has pretty much been cleaned up now.

Once I get everything moved over to my laptop and I see how well it crunches through certain workstreams, I'll customize the list of projects it works on to those I know I can get done in a 10-day period given the limited number of hours each week I'll be working on this laptop.

There are various ways and places to find this information but the most informative one is the very first line of BOINC's message log after a fresh start. In your case it should be something like "Starting BOINC client version 6.2.28 for windows_intelx86". Otherwise you can usually see it in the bottom right corner of BOINC's advanced view (but unfortunately not always). And to know under which BOINC's version a specific WU has been run you can find this information in its Result Log accessible by clicking on its status in your Results Status page: "<core_client_version>6.2.28</core_client_version>".

Most often simply stating "the latest version" does not help if we cannot be sure of where you get it from and for which system.
However, by consolidating all information in this thread I am pretty sure that you use WCG's version 6.2.28 for Windows and you don't need to reply unless I am guessing wrong.

Happy crunching. Jean.

PS: Please edit your opening post and append [RESOLVED] to its title.

Re: Controlling Concurrent Proccess on New HP 7i Laptop w Windows 7

Thanks for all the info. I did check the logs and the version was 6.2.28. My processes are working fine now and I've sucessfully trimed my profite down to those projects that generally get done in 6-7 hours or less which will work in my current usage of my laptop each 10 days.

Mark this one now RESOLVED
