Just saw this:
----------------------------------------edited for profanity - ErikaT God's truth, I usually pick my words carefully. Didn't think I said anything that could be considered "profane" by even the most thin skinned person. Oh well.. Plus 48 hours. System is running like a champ, nice and cool and everything appears to be well. I like it, I just want it to run faster! ![]() I see bbover in the thread. Hey Bill, you got any engineers over there at IBM that know how to beat this bclk issue? ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Movieman at Nov 12, 2009 5:31:20 PM] |

judson .. those CPUs are not out in retail yet.
MM sometimes gets beta hardware and gets everything tested up and analysed so we can get right into crunching when they are released :kudos: |

update:
----------------------------------------Looks like 64,000-65,000PPD at 2660mhz is a good working number so far. Very impressed with this. The part that 'gets" to me is the amount of production and at the same time realizing how far from the cpu's potentials it is. When you realise that could you make adjustments in the bios this could run upwards of 4000mhz easily it frustrates one a bit. My general outlook on life is to try and see the glass as 1/2 full but when it comes to PC's efficiency I tend to see the glass as 1/2 empty. Not used to having a machine loafing along at so slow a speed but I guess I have to accept that for the time being. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Movieman at Nov 13, 2009 5:46:41 PM] |

MM - so do you think the OC ability will remain status quo? SP - OC to you drop, DP - not a chance? Any indicators from the MOBO mfg if they are even thinking about providing any clock/ volt/ multi settings in a new bios?

I don't think you'll ever see anything from Supermicro that would allow overclocking. That companies main focus is on stability and longevity and I can't fault them for that. BUT to get that, they maintain control of all the parameters and that means no OC'ing as they like many companies haven't yet opened their eyes to the fact that intelligent overclocking can yield great benefits but the key is the word intelligent. Very small increases in voltage to the cpu can bring large benefits without effecting the cpu's lifespan. An example: My Yorkfield systems cpu has a factory voltage of 1.25v. factory speed on that cpu is 3160mhz With a simple increase to 1.35v and memory from 1.8v to 1.9v I run that system at 4171mhz on air 100% loaded for almost a year now and it's in a closed case. That machine is my daily driver and does app 20-22K a day in WCG. 4 cores, no hyperthreading.. ![]() |

If I remember correctly a long long time ago I had a dual socket Supermicro MoBo that had Jumper wires soldered at the factory to allow OC'ing. It was for a 166 MHz P-Pro to run at 200 MHz (told ya it was a long time ago ).I've still got a later version of that board w/o the jumpers (they worked them into the MoBo). I could be mistaken since it was so long ago. ![]() ![]() |

Ran perfect when I shut it down. Hidden in the bios was a setting to run the FSB at 100,103,105,107 or 112.. Ran it at 112 for 784mhz.. Probably the last time Supermicro let you overclock a dualie intentionally! ![]() Also sitting in there is a 1999 quad P3 xeon system complete as it came from the factory in one of their excellent cube cases.. 102lbs.. Looks just like this one, identical: http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/pedestal/8000/sys-8050.cfm Plus a 2003 X5DAE w/2-2400/512/533 P4 xeons.. Gave away a 2005 X6D something with 2-3600/2mb/800 Irwindales that I dropped #4500.00 on back in late 2005.. In addition to the westmere system I have a SM X7DAL-E w/2-X5460's and a X7DWA-N with 2-X5470's on WCG.. Those are in another guys name.. Why all the Supermicro when I get frustrated at not being able to overclock them? Easy, there is NO board manufacturer that makes as good a board period. I've never had one fail in any way. Like tanks, they run and run and run. No, I don't work for them. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Movieman at Nov 14, 2009 2:12:12 AM] |
