Poor Data Representation Has Negative Effect

Now i know this is normally a feedback/Suggestion type topic... but it is hard to judge what has been chatted about in there or acknowledged by the powers that be... and it is more of a discussion to see what other people actually think about it ahead of a formal suggestion. So here goes.

1) There is alot of team based data on the WCG site.

2) Most teams would not find it all that positive to view, and thus not as motivating to fold more as it could be.

3) Teams should be shown based on team size. Allowing 3-4 Top 10 groups based on size to encourage smaller teams.

When you view the team based rankings your see the likes of Slash, IBM, TW and MOT on top, basically off in a land of their own. Basically Competing at a level that the rest of WCG (90% of the people) aren't ever going to reach.

This must suck for Joe team that has 20 members and has little chance of growth. Therefore when they look at the mountains of Data they are always on page 20. When really they should be rewarded/patted on the back just as much as identity-less slob in a Big Team A.

Now the idea is that of the top points per day page or something you have the top 10 of several groups. And then you could go through that by clicking on the sections to get the the whole list like we have today.

i.e you have a top 10 for the whole grid.
Top 10 for teams with less then 100 Members.
Top 10 for teams with less then 50 Members
Top 10 for teams with less then 25 members.

As such the teams that are small (and while we wish they would just join TW and be done with it) can then compete against one anther in a visible place. Without having to then dig though 5-6 pages of team stats to find themselves. Plus it allows other teams to view the other top teams who are doing just as dedicated a job as MOT/TW without the membership base.

Now why did TW and MOT not need this to encourage them to reach the top? TW is a site that is over 6 years old and has 20k registered members. When we raced through the lower numbers we always knew where we were going to end up. MOT? They are very focused and recruit based upon their goals. They aren't bound by geography/corporation or even Website boundaries. They attract a much more dedicated folder then most other teams.

The MOTvTW rivalry has increased our numbers dramatically... how many other teams would benefit from a higher profile through better representation of existing WCG data?

Cliff Notes

Teams should be shown based on team size. Allowing 3-4 Top 10 groups based on size to encourage smaller teams. The data is already in the DB, it is just a case of representing it better. It would increase the total output of the WCG.

Super idea! While MOT was a small team of 7 when I joined early in December, we had MLCBA and Compudude on board within a month, so we were doing pretty well early on. We also seem to have a terminal case of happiness and that has also helped us along the way. I think that it would be tough to be one of the smaller teams now with no hope of ever being among the top 10. Their contributions are every bit as valuable to the project as are those of the larger teams and this would be a great way of recognizing that contribution. It might even be worth extending the thought to recognizing individual members who are not able to install the WCG software on 40 or 50 devices at work. How about a top 10 list of individuals for all of WCG, a top 10 for those with 25 or fewer devices, 15, 5 or 2 or fewer. This would have to wait for the fix that will allow people to combine results from extra devices that were caused by having to re-install the software though. There are a lot of ghost devices out there.

I think all WCG members need to download tribes and compete against each other in a tribes/wcg ladder competition.

Re: Poor Data Representation Has Negative Effect

pfft... /. would post another front page story and double their output again. I'm content with knocking off IBM's 2 best teams.

BTW, I may say some retarded and inflammatory things about IBM, but honestly - they make some great hardware. A poor family member of mine received an old IBM P233 from a co-worker, and I was amazed at how fast it ran after I formatted and re-installed. The old iron was still good...

Yeah i thought about the member idea... figured someone else would mention it and thus keep my first post nice and simple :)

on the ghost devices.... they should allow you some way to mark whether a device is dead or alive. Thus only showing the active devices per user.

Who gives a sh*t who has more points than someone else?
Isn't the whole idea of the project more or less altruistic?

Now I have to flaunt my points, right?
I have 136K +.
After all, it's all about points and not helping the scientists...

Should I add the "Look at Me! I have over 100,000 Points!"
graphics here?

its not 100% altruistic as can be seen by the fact there are points and teams. The points are there to motivate people to fold more. And thus futher advance the project.

titles are based on posts i believe.

I don't see the point to mocking people that pay attention to scores. While their goal may be racking up points, in the end they are still crunching numbers and returning units. This is what is important.
