Hi
I am a wcg since a year, and I have only a question to ask to the wcg project's admins: Why all the projects are only 32 bits workunits? When will we see 64 bits wu? ![]() |

It's mostly because the actual floating point registries of your computer are still 32 bit ;>). The more optimizations are applied to science apps, the more homogeneity groups have to be created, the more work in testing, validating as a simple conversion does not necessarily produce the same result. 9 sciences, 4 platforms, probably 100 or more homogeneity groups. Too much for the small staff.
----------------------------------------But, if you have a 64 bit OS/Client, you already experience very substantial improvement over 32 bit, particularly on the integer intense apps such as Help Cure Cancer. 25% or more faster processing.

So only Help Conquer Cancer is running as a 64 bit application? Or is it faster to crunch if you have a 64 bit OS which has an increase output for integer apps?
----------------------------------------Is there any beta going around for 64 bit apps or even GPU based? |

64 bit OSses are just more efficient at processing certain instructions. I just said HCC is seemingly benefiting most and to a lesser extend the other WCG sciences, all 32 bit compiled, do so too, so when my W7 official release arrives, it will be a 64 bit to max the Q6600 hardware's features.
----------------------------------------No beta's for 64 bit apps nor GPU betas. Latter maybe next year. Certainly not earlier than WCG being happy with the 6.10 client that has the ability to manage GPU based grid applications. Hoped for adoption of that client version maybe in December.

I would advise anyone buying a new operating system to get a 64bit system. As well as being slightly faster generally, they are more secure, more reliable, can handle 64bit applications (there are Boinc Versions that utilises some 64bit advantages), and of course large amounts of RAM - Something people should pay particular attention to when using systems such as Vista and Windows 7. Stick Office 2007 onto a system with Outlook and watch the system eat up a couple of Gigs of RAM.
----------------------------------------I believe some of the most recent betas required 1.5GB of RAM? That would not leave you with much on a 32bit system that can only use between 3.2 and 3.5GB! This has been discussed elsewhere, so I wont go on. Obvious Suggestion! It might be a good idea if we could specify which projects run on which systems. Knowing that my 64bit systems can do more work on the HCC, I would like to set them to run those tasks. I can sort of do it manually, by messing with the Boinc Network usage preferences, and changing my projects online, but it is a bit of a pain to do on many systems many times. Sekerob, are there any other projects that you know of, off hand, that perform better on 64bit systems. Thanks, PS. Running Windows 7 Pro 64bit (4GB RAM) with Boinc on 2 systems â it is excellent! Ignore the question, the answer is here,
https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...ad_thread,25934_offset,20 64bit OS speed increase by project: HCC 35% Faster HCMD2 35% Faster IADS 25% Faster HFCC 25% Faster FAAH 25% Faster |

Theoretically you could determine a gain with fixed run time RICE by counting the seeds in the result log. Run a few under 32 bit and a few under 64 bit.
----------------------------------------Just received the W7 kit which includes both the 32 and 64 bit discs so when time comes around and dual booting permitted that's going to be a fun experiment to discover what's up with that.

When you click on that button the address window in the address bar is filled in with the precise link to insert in your post for that purpose. Cheers. Jean. |

Sekerob, sounds like a worthwhile experiment
It would be more productive if People with 64bit systems ran tasks that are quicker on their systems. If I knew one project was not as good at utilising 64bit systems, I would try to manually run that on my 32bit systems and the faster tasks on my 64bit systems, though doing so manually is a bit of a pain. For people with one system there is no problem here and they could implement that strategy straight away. Perhaps the tasks could be assigned/appropriated by the server according to the users system? Jean, thanks for the Link. |

...though doing so manually is a bit of a pain. For people with one system there is no problem here and they could implement that strategy straight away. Updating a profile takes one minute and regarding projects selection you only need to do it once in a while (the way a project performs on a given machine does not change over its life usually). If you group devices with similar characteristics under the same profile that should ease your life considerably. |
