Should I upgrade from 5.10.30?

I have never updated my Boinc Client. Is there a benefit to upgrading from 5.10.30?

Thanks

Re: Should I upgrade from 5.10.30?

Same answer as last time: if your installation works well and if you don't miss any particular feature that might be in later releases why would you upgrade? It is not BOINC which does the hard work, it is the science applications, so later relases will not add anything to your productivity.

You can also review the announcement post of the current WCG version and see if any of the described features or improvements would make your life easier?
Otherwise remember the old motto, if it's not broken don't fix it. smile

In the coming weeks the techs will work on making a clean version of version 6.10 which will become the new recommended version for new installations or upgrades. You might keep an eye on this forum to see when it is ready and delay your decision until then.

Cheers. Jean.

To qualify that last line of Jean... December an internal note said, if all goes well... with an official beta. For now 6.10 is still thoroughly in Alpha testing, unless I missed something on my current testbed running 6.10.13 :D

I'm presently running version 6.4.5 (Linux). When going to the download area the client offered is version 6.2.15. This is an older version or?

WCG skipped all of 6.4. 6.6 6.8 and plans to work through and endorse 6.10 as noted above.

Thanks for the response. That's exactly what I was looking for. I didn't know that Boinc versions had no effect on my productivity.

That makes my decision a lot easier.

Apparently the biggest difference, in some projects, is going from a 32bit to 64bit OS. I have just switched to 64bit Windows7 Ultimate on one of my pc's, so it will be interesting to see if it makes a difference here at WCG. I am also using Boinc 6.10.13. It is required on a different project, in order to use all the different options for the gpu, and I have had no problems with it so far on any other project.

Re: Should I upgrade from 5.10.30?

Many discussions, the client does nothing but 'manage'. If the OS is 64 bit it can take advantage in more efficiently process the sciences, so you will see gains on e.g. HCC and a few more WCG projects. Some in the order of 25% or more quick completion per job. It's mostly Integer calculations that gain. Here's hoping WCG will bring out a 64bit client version with 6.10 as it does 32bit to make it official. There's more and more 64bit OSses out there.
