Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

Less or more snow cover? That's of no importance at all. More important (and certainly alarming) is that the 'permanent' permafrost is thawing (e.g. in Alaska).

Conservationists take nine flights a year, despite knowing danger to environment, study shows

Conservationists may preach about the importance of going green to save the planet, but most have a carbon footprint which is virtually no different to anyone else, a new study has shown.

Scientists as Cambridge University were keen to find out whether being fully informed about global warming, plastic in the ocean or the environmental impact of eating meat, triggers more ethical behaviour.

Interesting link in the Torygraph. Those I know in conservation have much lower carbon footprints than those mentioned in the article. It would be interesting to hear more about how the sample was selected.

My old core 2 duo won't quit.
I thought it would meet a quick end running boinc since May.
Apparently Dell know how to make a desktop. Literally running silent apart from the hard drive.

I have 2, core 2 duo laptops circa 2008. I've replaced hard drives but that's about it. Vista 32 bit. One Acer and one Sony. I also have a Dell Intel 2120 i3 from 2011, me. All of them are underclocked and run fine. The fan on the Sony failed but it still runs fine.

Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

mandated U.S. ethanol quotas eat up 40% of this nation’s corn, grown on over 36 million acres of cropland, to replace 10% of America’s gasoline.

Reminds of hydrogen, which only requires water and some solar energy to split it into oxygen and hydrogen, and which turns back to water, when motorized, carbon neutral.

Unlike one single Tesla battery (manufacturer at last doesn't matter), which produces a carbon bill of eight years of running a gasoline engine (over 200.000 kms).
And this before whatever electrical car even drives for the first time.

This is an example on a small scale (so far, at least) of scientists attacked by political activists on the left. No matter that the left previously lionized them. No matter how eminent the scientists, how distinguished their work, or how well-founded the research — the protests begin if it contradicts their ideology. Science “denial” is a phenomenon on both the Left and the Right.
Larger examples are the jihads against Professor Roger Pielke Jr. (here, here, and here), Roger Pielke Sr., and Dr. Judith Curry. (Science deniers on the far right are less active; the right’s energy goes to attacking doctors who do abortions). This problem appears to be growing worse, as greens become increasingly active against science whose conclusions they do not like — as the left becomes increasingly active on colleges suppressing speech they do not like (recent examples: calls to fire Professor Scott Yenor at Boise State U). and professor Bret Weinstein at Evergreen State College).

Al Gore brings global warming message to Pittsburgh, warns of its effect on Pennsylvania
http://triblive.com/local/valleynewsdispatch/...burgh-warns-of-its-effect
Climate change is impacting life in Pennsylvania, and its effects will become increasingly obvious as the century progresses, former vice president Al Gore told a room of 1,300 people at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

World’s First Offshore Wind Farm Retires: A Post-Mortem

Date: 18/10/17
M J Kelly, Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom

The first-ever offshore wind farm, Vindeby, in Danish waters, is being decommissioned after twenty-five years, DONG Energy has announced.[1] By its nature it was an experiment, and we can now see whether or not is has been a successful alternative to fossil or nuclear-fuelled electricity.
https://www.thegwpf.com/worlds-first-offshore-wind-farm-retires-a-post-mortem/
Other windfarms have performed even worse. Lely, an smaller farm sited off the Netherlands coast, was decommissioned last year.[6] It consisted of four turbines of 0.5 MW capacity, and cost £4.4 million in 1992. One nacelle and blades failed in 2014 because of metal fatigue.[7] It produced 3500 MWh per year, implying a load factor of 20%. At the same €50/MWh as above, it would have earned €4.2 million, less than the initial project cost, let alone the additional cost of any maintenance, by any way of reckoning.[8]
