Wow, we just got the ruby, emerald, and saphire badges we had been begging for for over a year...and now you guys want more?! When the Sapphire badge was introduced, there were 100's of crunchers who had already earned 5 years on some projects at that time, and now there are more. |

Interesting thread..
----------------------------------------I was just looking at my own stats and thinking that I hope no one "rates" my involvement based on these badges as I tend to concentrate on three of the projects..Aids and the two cancer projects.. I don't chase badges but it might be nice to see something for us folks that don't run all the projects but rather concentrate on a few. Project Points Generated Results Returned Total Run Time (y:d:h:m:s) Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy - Phase 2 96,644 275 0:023:01:55:58 Influenza Antiviral Drug Search 1,282 2 0:000:08:57:50 Help Fight Childhood Cancer 15,583,129 24,582 12:240:04:22:04 The Clean Energy Project 8,526 9 0:002:03:08:56 Nutritious Rice for the World 67,572 60 0:020:23:37:06 Help Conquer Cancer 14,047,506 25,102 11:291:12:39:09 Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 529,478 1,117 1:176:21:09:26 FightAIDS@Home 15,176,100 33,432 18:049:23:35:24 Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together 263,973 526 0:107:19:43:27 Genome Comparison 41,350 381 0:041:15:33:51 Help Defeat Cancer 146,375 771 0:129:23:03:27 ![]() |

in case anyone was wondering what those total up to ...
runtime - 45:001:16:09:40 (#336) points - 46,004,923 (#157) results - 86,322 (#191) MM is just one of those real serious crunchers ... some of his badges may only be bronze but he's got a heart of GOLD in my book. |

I would say no. Even though I could certainly get a few of those badges. I also think that you are ignoring the negative effects on those that have little hope of gaining even the current levels. At some point, at some times, what seems to be a motivating factor for some also becomes a de-motivator of others.
Second point, numbers are already used to indicate the second stage of a project. So, Dengue when it returns will be the mosquito with a "2" on it ... use the number also for additional levels and you would have two twos on the badge which would look odd to say the least ... And the people that have the farms, even small ones like mine are not likely to do less than we are doing now without the addition. Though I will say, that I am not likely to give up completely, add more levels and I am likely to only concentrate to one level and quit because I cannot top out as I can now ... as I say, speaking only for myself, add more levels and I am not very likely to react as expected and may wind up doing less overall because I cannot top out ... motivate the top performers, perhaps demotivate the mid and low level people that in aggregate do more ... Just my thoughts ... |

Just my thoughts ... I could not agree more Paul. At some point badges just get silly. How about one for returing a result? One for joining the forum? One for your birthday? One for each year you crunched? And if you leave WCG ... all your badges turn into a black one with a skull and crossbones? Personally I like YoYo's approach. Four badges and the "Master Level" requires one million BOINC credits for that specific project (that would be 7 million in WCG Dog Year points). It is a small club and I am not a member ... YET! I think it is a better system ... but then the Germans build better cars than we do in the US too. ![]() ![]() |

Snow Crash: Thank you, but honestly, I'm what I'd call a 'medium" cruncher. Many, many people do much more than I do. Like most, I do what I can with the resources I have and can afford. I have just three machines here running in my name and 2 others in another guys name( he financed, I built and run)
----------------------------------------To Paul Buck and Dataman: I understand how you guys feel. I made my point but it isn't a big deal to me. WCG could kill the badges tomorrow and I'll still be here as I imagine you two guys would be. If I had one thing I could get all excited about it would be to push WCG to institute 64 bit cpu computing. I could understand their reluctance a few years back but today all modern cpu's are 64 bit capable and if designed well one app would do both 32 bit and 64 bit as most windows apps do right now. OK, enough OT, back to badges..:-) ![]() |

I also think that you are ignoring the negative effects on those that have little hope of gaining even the current levels. Great thought. Lets scrap all the Olympic medals because you can not get a Gold medal in Biathlon. I guess its will be just too bad for those who can EARN the medal....add more levels and I am likely to only concentrate to one level and quit because I cannot top out as I can now... So are you saying that we should scrap all the badges because you can only earn the Bronze? But wait a minute, you have badges higher than bronze. Good thing you didn't quit, otherwise you would not have earned those 2 Sapphires. as I say, speaking only for myself, add more levels and I am not very likely to react as expected and may wind up doing less overall because I cannot top out... So you will quit unless you get a Diamond badge. That is the spirit.I just don't understand this line of reasoning. Why can't we recognize what people have earned. My first goal was to get Bronze in every project, with 2 machines and I was pleased to reach that goal so I set another goal even higher. Sure, I was disappointed that I didn't have 800 machines at my service, but I didn't have 800 machines, I only had 2 at the time, so I did what I could. How could I possibly be offended, when I only had 2 machines? The top 20 Members crunched 59,000+ results yesterday which was about 14% of the days work. It sounds like you think they do not deserve any recognition. We disagree. I don't see a problem with a Diamond badge for 100 years. Plus, I will not be offended that I will never achieve that badge. WCG is about crunching WU for the scientists. Everyone who helps should get recognized for their contribution, to the level of their contribution. |
