WU distribution policy?

When I select a certain project on the "My Projects" page, I only receive WUs for this project, which means that my computer is dedicated to that project. Cool. But what does this mean to the project itself, i.e. how does this affect the distribution to the rest of the computers?

So here is a hypothetical example: Let's consider a project that runs at 20 CPUyears per day. If I now had a cluster of computers that could contribute 10 CPUyears a day, and I would dedicate them to this project, I would expect every other project to stay at the same rate, but "my" project jump to 30 CPUyears/day (given, of course, that the servers can run at that rate).

Is this how it is implemented? Or is it rather in a way that I will see 10 CPUyears/day of my project, but the other CPUs in the grid will only see half as many WUs of my project, so in essence I only added a series of computers to the grid, but not really pushed "my" project more than others?

Regards,
Martin

Re: WU distribution policy?

Very large participant such as MrKermit who moved from project to project have a considerable temporary impact on what science gets the momentary bigger chunk, but WCG indeed balances through the pool of multi-project participants how fast each project goes. Eventually though if for example members representing 20 percent of the grid power tick only HFCC and disable the 'if there is no work', I think it would be counter for WCG to insist on the even share principle if the work units are available of course... you thus see that HCMD, HFCC, FAAH and RICE can and are moving faster than others.

Below a chart on the balance of power over the last ~100 days. It shows that recently RICE was taken out of forced slow mode into normal share, shifting the powers. Uplinger explained this tuning happens continuously also because the work units are not always equally hard to compute or not unlimited in daily supply. Given the grid is in perpetual growth some sciences pick up without much impacting the others.

Sort of how I understand it works.

Re: WU distribution policy?

love your graphs (when i can see them sekerob but i cant at work)

my simple answer is there are only so many work units avalible for each project each day.. so if they are all being crunched by someone a person requesting those will eithor get work from another project or no work (depending if you have the 'if there is no work' box checked or not)

in general there is probaly more work out there for each project than is taken up per day and I am sure if every work unit from a perticular project gets grabed every day for a few days they might try to get more of those online to support but heck im just a simple home user with only 4 computers curently crunching so i dont know everything.

all i can say is try to put enough computers online and force them out of work on a project and watch what they do to accomidate you.
