stuck agent

I've been a member since last November and have logged over 135 day
of computer time. The last task from the Grid was an exceptionally
long one...and when completed it only generated an "Agent Paused"
message. I merely assumed there was a problem at the Grid. That was over 3 days ago. Even tried connection with my McAfee fire wall disabled. Still no luck. Any suggestions?

Re: stuck agent

It sounds as though something may have gone wrong with your installation. I assume you have already tried a reboot. The next step is to bring up Task Manager and kill WCGrid_Rosetta.exe. This will cause UD.exe to try to download a new copy of Rosetta and a new Work Unit. This is a drastic step, but you seem to already be past the simple ones. If that fails, uninstall the World Community Grid, then reinstall it, being sure to sign in as 'existing member' during the installation process, using your member name and password. Just change the device name (add 1 to it or something) to avoid confusion.

Please keep us posted on what happens.

Re: stuck agent

Hum... Well I don't know anything about McAfee firewall but if it is like ZoneAlarm you can shut it down and unbeknownst to you there is still a piece running! If McAfee has a similar design, that could be your problem.

You see, the software was changed last weekend and now firewalls all over are having fits with this "New Program". Sooooo it looks to me like the most likely cause is the firewall. Again I don't know anything about the McAfee firewall but there has to be in there somewhere something about program control. That is some bit that watches the IP connection and rides herd on all the programs in your machine that wish to communicate over the network. In that bit, there must already be an approval for the old WCG software but now that WCG software has changed.

Sooooo you need to go into McAfee and find the part that controls program access to the net and approve the new WCG Software. Usually Firewalls and the like provide a browse button that allows you to go to the program files, WCG folder and pick the one with the little green chevron on it. That should do it... (I least I hope smile )

More information on the WCG Software change is available here .

Re: stuck agent

To the techs. Is it possible for John to fix the problem without hosing the task?

John, is Rosetta still running the task. Or, holding it ready to upload?

Re: stuck agent

Well, if he brings up his McAfee Firewall and changes his General Summary to the Application Summary, it should show which applications he has established rules to permit access to the Internet in the last week. This should show the World Community Grid program. If it does not, then either he did not allow it access after the new version was downloaded or it never tried to access the Internet. I thought that turning off his firewall would have eliminated Access Denial as the problem.

Re: stuck agent

The piece that keeps running in ZoneAlarm is "TrueVector" and it contiues to block even after you shut ZoneAlarm down. I do not know for sure if this happens with McAfee or not; based on his note, it sounds like it might.

To really shut down ZoneAlarm, you have to uninstall it and reboot.
Edit: I never tried just to find the task in the task manager and kill it ... That might be possible. If I ever hit this problem again, I will try that

That one has stumped me more than once. Luckily you can reinstall it later and all the settings you had before are remembered.

Hopefully we will find out if McAfee has the same sort of qurk.

Regards All peace

Re: stuck agent

Julied: Several days ago the task was completed up to 98% and I
was ready to go to bed so I let the job run and my DSL connection on.
Next day it appeared the job had ended but no new task was down-
loaded by Rosetta. My completed points had not advanced so all I
can assume is there was no upload. Several other postings have called
my attention to the firewall situation which I shall investigate further.
If all else fails, I'll just log out of the Grid and rejoin as suggested by
someone else. I was not aware of the changes made at the Grid
Network about the firewall software situation.

Re: stuck agent

This post by Viktors seems to describe almost exactly the problem you are having John.

We have updated World Community Grid agent software on Saturday, May 7, 2005 17:00 UTC. After this, when your agent next returns its results, the update will be automatically applied. Some users may see an "Agent paused" message and/or get a pop-up window from their software firewall or other such protection software. If you do get one of these pop-ups, please authorize the new version of the code so that it is able to continue to use the Internet to connect back to our servers at address server.worldcommunitygrid.org over port 443. Depending on which firewall or other security software you use, the program names you might see in the pop-up are ud.exe, UDwin_3801_2844.exe, ud.scr, udtapi.dll, WCGrid_Rosetta.exe, or ud_nnnnn.exe where the nnnnn is some integer. If there is a checkbox to remember the setting, please check that also...

Re: stuck agent

Almost certainly, one of the firewalls is probably blocking the agent. First, it sounds like you are using multiple firewalls (Zonealamr, McAfee, ...) which would possibly cause problems. Also, I would update the firewall you do use to the latest version. For example, I found with McAfee, isome of its compoents (not the firewall itself) would block certain traffic even if you disabled all of their components. Hopefully newer versions would fix some of these kinds of problems. Furthermore, if some sort of blanket blocking rule was inserted, it might be easier to reinstall the firewall than to try to find the particular rule causing the blocking.

So you might try various combinations of disabling and/or reinstalling the firewall you want to use. When you want to see if any particular configuration solves the problem, you need to minimize the World Community Grid agent and then open it again. This makes it expire it's timeout wait for when to next try to communicate. A message box will come up which you can click OK on and then it will try immediately.

Re: stuck agent

To everyone who posted suggestions...basically you were all on the right
track. The problem has been corrected. It was my firewall blocking the
connection. And, the person who said that even disabling the firewall
didn't turn it off was also correct. I went into the 'applications' part of
McAfee and found UD.exe totally blocked.

The only thing that puzzles me is how that program got blocked in the
first place...I certainly didn't do it. The strong coincidence of a software
upgrade going out last Saturday and my problems showing up the
following day or so points the finger to the Grid. I'm running MS2000
(professional) for quite a few years now and never had something like
this happen before. But, thanks for all your help.
