I haven't been around here a lot in recent months. In fact, the last few months are a little foggy. I felt like I was in one of those 80's music videos where one guy is moving in slow motion while the rest of the world goes by at warp speed. I mean, summer is over tomorrow. WTF happened?
----------------------------------------Anyway, maybe I'm back now . . . and maybe not. It's so hard to say. But one of the things I noticed tonight was nearly 2000 guests and around 200 members. I know some of that, at least on the guest side, is due to RSS and the fact that it probably took a while for that to really catch on. But damn, there must have been some significant growth too. So are people just more involved now or did we have a significant growth spurt over the summer that I missed? ![]() ![]() |

Neither. The session timeout is longer, so more people appear to be logged in at the same time. This happened during the forum upgrade.

So are people just more involved now or did we have a significant growth spurt over the summer that I missed? There have been about 12,000 new member registrations in our team since mid-May, but I doubt many of them are logged on this forum at any time. Welcome back, and I wish you feel better. Jean. |

Thanks Didactylos - for whizzing on my parade.
----------------------------------------I'm kidding. I'm sure we've had some growth, but the timeout explanation does make sense. Thanks Jean. 12k new members for just one team huh? That's pretty amazing. Congrats dude. Maybe you could misdirect a few new members to Team Gothic? Hehehe. ![]() ![]() |

Hmm, Decrypthon, ranked #89 by Boincstats team-stats, currently with... 8882 BOINC-users. Since the number of BOINC-users is less than 12k, there must be a mistake somewhere... ![]() "I make so many mistakes. But then just think of all the mistakes I don't make, although I might." |

Hmm, Decrypthon, ranked #89 by Boincstats team-stats, currently with... 8882 BOINC-users. Since the number of BOINC-users is less than 12k, there must be a mistake somewhere... The first mistake is that you didn't read carefully enough: I intentionally wrote "member registrations" (which is what matters for this forum, the subject of this thread). I know that too many of them have not returned a single result, that's always like that with mass mailings And many have stopped already. The second mistake is that you don't want to accept that the reference for WCG matters is WCG's website and stats, not BOINCstats, although they are very useful and I use them daily for numbers not available or not easy to manipulate in WCG's stats. Like the number of active members in the team which is slowly shrinking. Last point, Decrypthon is a WCG only team particularly dedicated to muscular dystrophy (about 2/3rd of its daily points). Therefore the ranking which matters for us is inside WCG, #14 in WCG's list by points as well as in BOINCstats. Don't forget your signature... Jean. Like the number of active members in the team which is slowly shrinking. Hmm, there wasn't anyting about "registrations" in the message I quoted. As for using BoincStats, this was mainly to filter-out the UD-only-users, since HCMD was UD-only did expect Decrypthon had a larger fraction of UD-users than most old teams, this apparently isn't the case. Also, didn't expect such a huge number of users on the team what never managed to return a single result. Last point, Decrypthon is a WCG only team particularly dedicated to muscular dystrophy (about 2/3rd of its daily points). Therefore the ranking which matters for us is inside WCG, #14 in WCG's list by points as well as in BOINCstats. Very few teams has so many users, so atleast to me it's more interesting to compare across BOINC to see how it's doing in total stats. Also, there's multiple other single-project-teams among top-100, so only running a single project shouldn't be a disadvantage. Besides, if manages to become the top producer in WCG, the only way to increase the position is to look on BOINC-total. ![]() ![]() "I make so many mistakes. Hmm, there wasn't anyting about "registrations" in the message I quoted. When jumping into a written conversation for pointing out mistakes I think the least to do is to check the beginning... Also, didn't expect such a huge number of users on the team what never managed to return a single result. Most likely it is not that they could not, it is that they were not interested in going further. Most of this team's recruitment has been done via mass mailings when HCMD and HCMD2 have been launched. People in charge have put a link to the Decrypthon site in their mailings. There you are routed to WCG only after registering to the Decrypthon site which initializes the registration to WCG altogether. Then if people want to go on they just have to download and install the program and that's it. If they are not interested it is just one more blank registration in WCG and in the team. Interest for the recruiters: they can easily count how many people pass each step. The bad side is that high number of blank registrations laying around. But globally this operation was positive: over the same period as the total 12k registrations 7,816 of these new members did return results. Many results in total and many really new members, I mean people who probably had never heard of WCG or BOINC before. Very few teams has so many users, so atleast to me it's more interesting to compare across BOINC to see how it's doing in total stats. Also, there's multiple other single-project-teams among top-100, so only running a single project shouldn't be a disadvantage. Again, you missed the point. I never said or ever implied that, I just meant that for all these people it is simply irrelevant. They are people right in the official target, i.e. giving the unused power of their computer while it is normally switched on for a cause, not for a BOINC championship. They are here to help cure diseases, not to search aliens or to build the map of our galaxy or to beat any team inside WCG or even less outside. That's why this cross-project ranking is interesting for us but not for them. And regarding needing other challenges if/when this team would become the top producer inside WCG, well, we are still far from that and recent newcomers will obviously help delay that time! ![]() |
