"Wulf Glatz, a 35 year old scientist from the Politechnic Federal School in Zurich, has developed a new generation of the thermoelectric generator which converts warmth into electric current.
Thanks to the device there will be mobile phones which will be charged by body heat. The batteries of these mobile phones are one of the most polluting devices because of the materials they are made of. But they also involve a constant energetic expenditure, because their utility is limited to the length of time it’s been charged. Glatz’s invention, was awarded with the Swisselectric Research Award 2009 yesterday, given by the electricity companies in Switzerland. These generators can be installed also in the apartments to produce electricity through the heat delivered by the heating of the building. Similarly, they can feed the electronics on a vehicle due to the engine’s heat, which would save a 10 percent of fuel. According to the jury, it is expected that this technology wil reach the market in about two years." http://momento24.com/en/2009/09/17/new-techno...ll-phones-with-body-heat/ |

Very impressive, they should just add that to processors and wireless computer stuff, then no need for batteries + less power used for crunching :D

If the technology works out and can produce high enough levels of electricity, this could be a major breakthrough in power generation.
----------------------------------------The one drawback could be the costs involved. However, it might work well for smaller energy requirements such as cell phone battery recharging etc. if done at a reasonable price. Probably not as cost-effecient for running a refrigerator or cookstove. ![]() "Everything in moderation, including moderation" -- Mark Twain |

But machines that took over the world would need us for body heat! :D

Don't think that generating energy from your warm house would be practical, unless it's in the summer and you don't want the heat... You would have to generate heat to generate electricity.
----------------------------------------Seems like a good idea for mobile devices, though; my cell phone does get fairly warm in my pocket. |
