Hello all. I recently had a problem with my main number cruncher that necessitated re-installing my grid client. No big deal, except that I lost a partial work unit and now the grid recognizes me having two device installs, when in fact I only have one. Anyhow, after reinstalling I received a message from the grid, informing me that I had been generating unnecessary network activity, caused by my agent crashing or some such... At any rate, I have no record of any of this on my end, no indication of extra network activity, no indication that the agent was crashing... I checked my system event logs and there is positively nothing being logged in there from the agent.
So here is my suggestion... I would like some sort of agent activity logging. I don't care where it gets logged, whether it is in a system log, some separate logging application, or just some dumb text file that I can parse on my own if I so choose. I just want some sort of logging so that I know what the agent is doing, and possibly a way to adjust the amount of logging detail the agent captures(just crashes, every time a new work unit is started, cpu time, etc...) I could be totally missing something and perhaps this is already a possibility, but I am not seeing any place where I can view what the agent is doing, and I prefer not to wait for some admin at the grid to tell me there is a problem. Thanks in advance for your replies. --David |

Hello daveman1010220,
It is a good suggestion. [Grin. I should blush when I say that, I suggested something similar sometime ago.] Right now the hope is that we can create a Linux Agent in 2005 incorporating the lessons learned since our startup, so it might take some time to see results. A few months back (? February ?) there was some discussion of the fact that some members' computers very obviously had problems that they were unaware of. One suggestion was that the WCG staff send emails to such members if the members allowed email from the WCG. I never knew what was decided, so your post comes as a welcome surprise. I am glad to hear that everything is working now! mycrofth |

If you get more than one or two of these messages from the agent, we would prefer you contact us via our support email in Contact-Us. We just notice the unusual activity and can send the message to the agent. If it happens rarely, perhaps it is just a network hick-up or something. However, if it continues, then there may be a large number of reasons for these messages. Often, the machine has been attacked by a virus or might have some sort of configuration problem.

Yes, everything seems to be back to normal, whatever the problem was. However, agent logging would definitely be a welcome addition.
In reply to the other post regarding a linux client, who is doing the development on such a thing? If this is an open source client, ie, there are independent developers working on it, I would like to help out. :-) Please let me know if this is the case. Thanks. |

We will keep your logging suggestion for possible future use.
Thanks for the offer to help on the Linux agent. However, additional outside help on this would not speed things up at this point, for reasons I cannot discuss here. In the end, we hope and think we will make the Linux community happy. Please be patient for a while. |
