I am planning to renew my computer rig.
----------------------------------------At the moment I run Vista 32 on a quadcore QX9770 CPU. There are 4 cores and 4 threads. At the moment I have the classical 3GB available out of 4GB of RAM installed. I will switch when the CoreI9 from Intel will be available (6 core and 12 threads) and to Windows 7 in 64bit. To compare apples with apples, if on my actual system I would switch from Vista 32 to Vista 64, would I get a sensible performance improvement in processing? Are some projects more sensitive to a 64bit system or there is no difference. On a 64bit system I can install 12GB ram instead of my 4GB. Will this improve performance in a visible way? Any reply would be welcomed. ![]() |

Hi,
----------------------------------------As a starting point suggest to visit previous threads discussing the pros of 64 bit Os + client. In a nutshell, yes there is a performance gain, even whilst all WCG science applications have 32 bit compilations only. cheers

Hello Hypernova,
----------------------------------------Yes, there are some little differences between projects regarding 32/64 bit operating system even if the work is only 32 bit compiled. You will notice some improvements (around 5-10%) with projects having a large part of integer work. The typical example is HCC. Likewise HCMD2 seems to be more "integer oriented" than other projects. Until we will not have a formal amd reliable analysis of the distribution of integer vs. float calculation, we can only observe and speculate. A major improvement would happen if, in the future, WUs would be also 64 bit compiled. Cheers, Yves |

The amount of RAM installed doesn't affect crunching performance as long as you have "enough". Meaning, your RAM never becomes full during normal use with BOINC running.
