I had WCG running on a different hard drive than the OS is on and that drive died. Now I can't re-install onto either C drive or another drive that's in the computer. Keep getting and error - Invald Drive: F:\ - when I try to run the installer. I've tried deleting everything I can find that's either BOINC or World Community Grid. I've tried saving to desktop and running and just running from WCG Home Page. Nothing so far has worked. Any ideas?

If you are running Windows XP you have a hidden folder under all users called "Program data" this has a Boinc folder wit a lot of files. Have you tried to remove these?

I don't have an English version of XP, so it's a little bit difficult too explain. But I will give it a try.
----------------------------------------First choose the menu left for help in explorer. (It should be Tools) Then choose the last alternativ. ( It should be folder options or somethong like that) Then choose the fane in the middle ( maybe show) Here you will get a long list of options. Then find something like "Hidden folders and files" choose show here. And then try my first answer. Hope this helps... ![]() |

David,
----------------------------------------First, which installer are you using? WCG's 6.2.28 or another one? Next, are you getting this message while trying to install on a F: drive, or when starting the installer even before being able to select anything? Read you later. Jean. |

Ken, First, thank you for helping on this strange problem. Now, could you please provide the full path of the hidden folder you are talking about? I don't understand what you mean and there is no "Program data" folder on my C: drive (checked with a system scan, and no hidden anything in my machines). Thanks in advance. Jean. |

Now, could you please provide the full path of the hidden folder you are talking about? I don't understand what you mean and there is no "Program data" folder on my C: drive (checked with a system scan, and no hidden anything in my machines). The default location of BOINC's data-directory for v6-clients depends on OS: win9x: "C:\Windows\All Users\BOINC\" or "C:\Windows\Profiles\All Users\BOINC\" win2k, winxp: "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\" Vista, win7: "C:\ProgramData\BOINC\" Would guess win2008 goes to same as vista, while win2003 goes to same as win2k. In case you're running a non-english version of windows, it's likely possible "Documents and settings" and so on is called something else... And, obviously, if you've selected another location when you installed BOINC, your data-directory will reside somewhere else. ![]() ![]() "I make so many mistakes. David, First, which installer are you using? WCG's 6.2.28 or another one? Next, are you getting this message while trying to install on a F: drive, or when starting the installer even before being able to select anything? Read you later. Jean. I've tried 6.2.28, an older one, and a newer one. I'm never able to choose where to install or anything else. It's starts running then throws that error message. I had planned on doing a default install since F drive died but something keeps pointing the installer to a drive that isn't hooked up now. ![]() |

Operating system is English version of XP Pro. I had Boinc installed on F drive. F drive died. Won't do anything. I'm trying to install Boinc but it is getting pointed to F drive even though F drive isn't even hooked up. I can't choose anything before I get the error message. I click download program, click run a couple of times, then I get the error message: Invalid Drive F:\. I've also downloaded to desktop and tried to run from there but the same thing happened.
----------------------------------------I've run a search on my computer for Boinc and for World Community Grid and deleted everything that the search turned up. Hasn't helped. I don't have any hidden folders on my computer. I selected the "Show Hidden Folders" option long ago. I'm thinking there must be something in the Registry that is pointing the installer to F drive. The Registry is something I don't know much about. I don't want to go deleting things in there since I don't know what I'm doing there. ![]() |
