I'm sure that members crunching HCMD2 have noticed that the WU names don't fit in the standard-with Name column of the BOINC "Advanced View" Tasks tab.
----------------------------------------Fitting in the names of fourth-round great-grandchild WUs, eg CMD2_0045-2P0W_B.clustersOccur-3B7B_A.clustersOccur_35_206507_207368_206779_206926_206823_206926_1 is a special challenge. I have the Project and Application columns squashed to minimum width. I don't like altering the Name column width every time I want to see the full name of one of these WUs. Apart from the inconvenience, I often miss selecting the column heading separator bar (|) and click in the heading space instead, so the tasks list gets sorted on Name or CPU Time, which is not really useful. Stretching the BOINC Manager window works OK on my LCD widescreen, but it won't stretch to more than about 1100 pixels on 1024x768 displays. And increasing screen resolution on the latter is rather pushing the technology for CRTs rescued from the street. Every HCMD2 WU name that I've seen so far contain 2 instances of the sub-string "clustersOccur". Shortening this to something like "ClOc" would help. ---- While on the subject of HCMD2 WUs, crunch times varying between about 20 min to 10+ hours are playing havoc with BOINC's work cache management. Micromanaging the queue by giving priority to later-generation WUs, which have shorter average run-times, helps avoid the situation where all WUs in the queue are short later-generation ones, while BOINC thinks they are long ones, based on first-generation run-times. Which is one reason that I want to see the full names of the WUs. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Rickjb at Sep 3, 2009 4:27:07 PM] |

You don't need to alter the columns from version 6.2 afaik. Just hover mouse over a result name ending in ... That feature has been for long available in BOINCview too.
----------------------------------------Yes we know about the cache issue. Can't do anything about it. Leave the queue sufficiently small so it does not overstep the 10 days deadline. Given I've seen factor 4 on my DCF, 2-3 days tops for the buffer is a good number. Then you don't have to micromanage either. For all projects except FLU and CEP there years of work to do so no one can sneak off with the last results. (but I do agree that the clustersOccur is a rather redundant piece. Could be abbreviated to CLOCC e.g.)

You don't need to alter the columns from version 6.2 afaik. Just hover mouse over a result name ending in ... That feature has been for long available in BOINCview too. That would(/will) certainly be nice but it is not yet available with the 6.2 versions, Sek. Rick, to avoid the sorting problems when you adjust the column width, you can also hook the column boundary inside the list without risking to change the sort sequence. But shortening the .clustersOccur markers would certainly be appreciated. ![]() Cheers. Jean. |

Thanks for feedback on my suggestion, Sek & JMB.

Rickjb, use the Accessible View. That provides tooltips.

Funny, was using that on 6.2 because you get more lines into the view that way.

Rickjb, use the Accessible View. That provides tooltips. OK for 6.2.28 (and thanks for the tip), but nope for 6.2.18 (too bad). Edit: But with the accessible view you can no longer catch the column border from within the list, it has to be from the header line. So you have to choose what you prefer. Fortunately, for 6.2.18, that choice is simple. Edit2: And I had forgotten, with the accessible view you have no sorting capability (so, in fact, it's not a problem to have to adjust columns from the header line), and the choice will be simple for 6.2.28 too for me, and probably for Rick as well. OK for 6.2.28 (and thanks for the tip), but nope for 6.2.18 (too bad). Hmm, the tooltip is in v5.10.45, so it's a little strange if it's not present in v6.2.xx... But then again, I'm not running Mac, that you seems to be using since it's v6.2.18... ![]() "I make so many mistakes. But then just think of all the mistakes I don't make, although I might." |

I am not running Mac either! 6.2.18 is also the current version in Synaptic and I run Ubuntu 9.04. Hmm, this must be something Synaptic has built themselves, since for v6.2.xx the last Linux-build is 6.2.15... ![]() "I make so many mistakes.
