Re: BOINIC eating disk space 6.2.28 XP

Even the message suggest to reset project, it's very seldom this will have any effects on getting an ocassional "exited with zero status".

As for disk-space, to minimize any interference from other sources, please re-boot your computer, and after BOINC has started again, copy the start of the info on the "Messages"-tab and post it in a forum-message. (If you're running Simple View, click "Messages" in bottom left corner.)

Well, look at that! Diagnosis #1 confirmed.

jfilby, reinstall BOINC making sure that the data directory is a folder reserved exclusively for BOINC, e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\BOINC

I am a little concerned that the uninstaller may damage your Windows installation. Please make sure you are fully backed up before attempting this.

Hmm, yes, since v6.2.xx will move the contents in the data-directory to the BOINC program-directory on uninstallation, things can become really messed-up...

One method to work-around this problem is:
1: Don't uninstall v6.2.28, instead download 6.6.36 and install this over top. (download from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php)
2: Uninstall v6.6.36.
3: Install whatever version you wants, making sure to select a separate BOINC-data-directory, example "C:\documents and settings\administrator\boinc".

Now, this method will lose your current wu's, and while it's possible to recover them, it's not worth it in your instance since you'll have little or no work, and little or no progress on any lost work anyway.

Re: BOINIC eating disk space 6.2.28 XP

Hi - thanks for the information on the data area. One last question though... How would I have known to select this option? Ran through the standard install, and nothing was telling me that if "BIONC installs in its usual way you can honk up your system".... not particularly clear on this matter.

I will try the new install of the latest code, but frankly I do not remember it asking me about a data location last time, but maybe I was in a hurry.

Thanks for your help and direction here.

Jim Filby.

jfilby, you must have changed the defaults in the installer, either manually, or because there was something unusual about the original installation you upgraded from.

If, some time in the past, you installed an alpha version of BOINC, then things can get severely messed up.

In the installer, after accepting the License Agreement, you'll come to a screen saying "BOINC Configuration".

Here the various options shows, like Program directory and Data directory, install as service and so on, but they're greyed-out. To change any of these options, you'll need to hit "Advanced".

To change Data directory, on the new screen there should now be listed a "Change..."-bottom for Data-directory (and another for program-directory).

As for how you've managed to change the Data-directory, most likely you'll forgotten you did it...

(BTW, to describe the installation, it would have been easier to just point to the install-instructions linked on the WCG-download-page, but unfortunately WCG still shows the v5-install-instructions...)
