Re: MAC OS X 10.6 - Snow Leopard

What BOINC version are you using? 6.2.18 is the default for WCG, and I would try to re-download another copy of 6.2.18, and make sure to close out BOINC entirely, and re-install. Another unsupported version could have a bug in the client preventing BOINC client not working properly under SL.

If that does not work, I would try Sekerob's reply to see if the port are not blocked. You will need to use the Network Utility which can be found under "Go<Utilities<Network Utility". Click the Port Scan tab and find out if the ports are available. Apple Help section can guide you regarding the Network Utility feature.

For whatever it is worth, you might try to ping (found in the Network Utility tab marked "Ping") IP 127.0.0.1 and use the "Send only 10 pings" option. You should have "10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0% packet loss." That is the result I receive on my Mac mini, and it may be possible the network connection may not be operational. I always like to make sure the network connection is present, and this may have little or no value to diagnose this problem.

Otherwise, brinktastee has stated 6.6.36 is operational and you might want to try that option, however 6.6.36 is NOT a supported BOINC version by WCG for reasons well documented in this forum.

Otherwise, I am out of ideas both realistic and far fetched.

Well, seeing Snow Leopard is just released, while v6.2.18 is over 1 year old, any compability-problems is more likely to be present in v6.2.18 than in more resent clients...

Not a Mac-user, but it was posted a week ago that under beta-Snow Leopard the "current (v6.6.xx) screensaver did not run", so various changes was needed to get screensaver to work correctly before v6.10.0 was released for alpha-testing. The latest Mac-alpha is v6.10.2.

Re: MAC OS X 10.6 - Snow Leopard

All the screen savers I had (the ones ported from *nix) were disabled. This is a change in how Snow Leopard handles screen savers more than a BOINC problem.

But Mr. Sparkle (you know the product made by Matsumura Fishworks and Tamaribuchi Heavy Manufacturing Concern) screensaver still works <G>

Re: MAC OS X 10.6 - Snow Leopard

After installing SL on my Mac Minis, 6.2.18 would not connect to WCG, projects or tasks which is the same situation other users previously reported.
This occurred before and after re-installing 6.2.18. When BOINC version 6.6.36 was installed, normal operations resumed without any problems.

Is anyone running 6.2.18 under SL or is 6.6.36 the only way for BOINC to work under SL?

Re: MAC OS X 10.6 - Snow Leopard

That too.

Again note the brinktastee' commentary that 6.6.36 works on SL. Follow his instructions. There's also a new Alpha Version 6.10.4 out , use at own peril, which has some fixes out. A summary:
BOINC 6.10.3 released for Macintosh

Charlie Fenton wrote:

I have posted BOINC 6.10.3 for the Macintosh to the download-all page. This build should work properly on Mac OS 10.3.9 through OS 10.6, including the screensaver.

Cheers,

The admin there said 'If you don't know where to find the download, you should not be running it'.

Re: MAC OS X 10.6 - Snow Leopard

Yep I installed Snow Leopard, and after a few reinstalls of Boinc I gave up. Sorry Boinc until there's a fix, I'm off line.

pbavis,

Did you try to install BOINC 6.6.36? This version can be found at
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ and click the "download" link under the "Volunteer" section.

Re: MAC OS X 10.6 - Snow Leopard: should GPU engage?

I have BOINC 6.6.36 running on a new Mac mini with SL, but it is only using the Intel Core Duo processor. It asserts "no coprocessors", apparently missing the NVidia GeForce 9400M graphics processing unit, which I thought could run CUDA programs. I do not see a way to update any NVidia drivers, and restarting/reinstalling BOINC has no effect. Should I expect BOINC to engage the GPU on a Mac mini running SL? If not, that's a loss. If so, any suggestions on what to try next?

Thanks
