Re: Upgrading computer

Hi Chris,
ATI out performs NVIDIA. I have several systems running both Nvidia and ATI cards. They both work quite well for crunching. Best bang for the buck is a Sony PlayStation 3! LOL! No Joke! Check Newegg.com for some good prices on video cards. Happy Holidays!

Re: Upgrading computer

This thread actually has some information regarding crunching unlike some other chat threads. What criteria do you use to determines if a thread should be locked or not?

If I underatand you correctly you are saying that it is OK to lock because Chris said so but my question is how did you determine that you wanted to lock this thread in the first place? There are so many other threads that have so much less valuable information in them but I have not seen you posting to get them locked also ... like what is the purpose of the bump thread? I am just trying to understand what rules you are trying to enforce or what your goals are.

Re: Upgrading computer

As the graphics card is the easiest part in your computer to replace, I recommend you now choose some budget card. It will take time to get nvidia and ati cards work properly in these projects and then your graphic card is old already.

Could you explain for a stupid like me, please?

Sorry, seems like I've forgotten this post.. But better late than never, right biggrin

What I've (probably) meant was, you got to be careful when installing eg. processor as you need to make sure the contacts between heatsink and motherboard are proper. But graphics cards are usually simply connected to PCI-e port and that's it. More powerful ones need an extra wire to a power supply, but no further instructions required.

Re: Upgrading computer

Jean Pierre, on this I do not follow your position. shame on you
I do agree with Snow Crash.
To crunch we need machines. Good machines at a good price, shelf or scratch built. When a thread does discuss these issues then let the thread live it's own life and when the topic is done it will dye by itself, and if it continues on technical issues then where is the problem?
This forum is Chat Forum so if crunchers want to talk hardware, overclocking, software anything that in the end benefits WCG I see no problem at all. wink
