Hi,
is it possible to set different max CPU usage settings for PC in use/not in use? Background: I have BOINC installed on a notebook which is very loud when running at 100%. So i deactivated the setting "calculate while in use" and set the max CPU usage to 100% - if i am away, the notebook can be as loud as it wants to be :) I would like to be able to contribute while working at the computer, but with a limited processor usage (At 50% CPU usage, the sound of the fan is acceptable). So, how do i set something like "50% CPU while in use, 100% CPU while not in use"? Or is this currently not possible - Might be a feature request? |

There is no such thing in BOINC, a number of times requested at the BOINC developers forum, not looked if it ever was transported into the Trac system as a feature request. The variations seen have been
----------------------------------------The amount (%) of memory during use and idle does exist and is a way to manipulate the number of concurrent processes running. E.g. a FAAH job uses ~100 mb ram. On a dual core thus set the % for ~100 mb RAM when in use and 300 mb when idle. As soon as BOINC hits the ~100mb during use one or more processes get paused, waiting for memory as it will log. Theory here is that the temps drop accordingly. Now Temp control can also be actively managed with TThrottle [written for BOINC on Windows]. Yesterday when it was extra hot here, I set it down from 60C cut off to 55C cut off. That dropped the fan noise substantially. Oh, and I dusted all the intake / outtake and cooling sections of the laptop yesterday. That took 5C off from the system reading.

You can also try playing with the settings in the Boinc Manager, under Advanced, Preferences, processor usage. When you say ok at the bottom though it will overwrite any website changes. So you have to chose one or the other to make your changes on. ![]() ![]() |
