WCG Resource Utilization

Guys,

I have this question bugging in my mind. What exactly does idle cycles mean which WCG claims to use? The reason I ask is, if I game at full HD with WCG running in the background(100%), the FPS drops drastically, If I snooze WCG, game plays fine at high FPS. Of course I am running 2X 9800GTXs in SLI mode. So I exceed the game graphics requirement. If the client were to use idle cycles of the CPU, then the game should run fine even with WCG in the background rite? Correct me if I am wrong here folks.

Regards,
Shiv

I think alittle of it is still in memory(don't know how much you have installed).

But then I'm more of a hardware guy.

Re: WCG Resource Utilization

Your game is using both the CPU and your graphics card. The 'idle' cycles that any BOINC client is using would be when your system in in idle - like when your screen blanks or goes to a screen saver.

If you're running a windows box, go into your task manager and click on the processes tab. If there's a button at the bottom that says something like "show processes from all users" click that. Now sort on the CPU column by clicking on it.

Now that you've done that, suspend BONIC and stop whatever else you may be doing on your machine. The top process in your task manager should now be the "system idle process". Those CPU cycles are what BOINC is using.

Hope that helps

Steve

Re: WCG Resource Utilization

Hello dustyshiv,
There is a special IDLE instruction that your CPU runs when no process is running instructions. The IDLE instruction uses very little power. BOINC preempts this IDLE instruction and runs your CPU at full power.
