Every day I see how the stats numbers grow with new members and a lot of new devices. I was watching this for many months and tens of thousands of new members arrived and more tens of thousands of new devices signed up. But it is really puzzling how come the result stats are not much different. If you only take 20.000 of new devices and if those devices have an out put of 8-10 results per day we should have a number close to 200.000 new results or in the range of 100 more years per day ... and this is not happening. We are still hovering under 300 years per day.
----------------------------------------Can anyone please explain to me how this is possible? Also, we can safely assume that the new members have better computers than those who started in 2004-2005, so it should be at least double cores (with few exceptions of quad core or single core that complete each other). |

I think, that there are a lot of people, who joined, looked around a bit, installed the software, let it run, and then noticed, that a game wasn't running as good as before running the client. So they threw it out of Systemstart, and never thought about it again.
Still they are registered, but not crunching. |

There are a number of threads on this topic, people retention, spread the word, quite a few more in fact. My short personal take with all the charting I'm doing is, that WCG is going much much better than any other spare CPU time utilizing Distributed Computing Grid / Project. People coming people going, work sizes changing, but the line continuous to be consistently above 'measured' expectation, the myriad of ways to help growth expanding almost monthly.

Even if there is one result, WCG sends thank you and reminder mails so we don't get forgotten too quickly ;>)

Hello damir1978,
One of the earliest suggestions in 2005 was that the statistics be changed to show 'active' users and 'active' devices, rather than registered users and devices. This will happen some day. sigh . . . . Lawrence |

Even if there is one result, WCG sends thank you and reminder mails so we don't get forgotten too quickly ;>) That's ok, but what about all the people, who don't like to register? They build a free email-adress, register, confirm once, and never look in that mailbox again. |

Yes, if you wish to take the negative view, there's a thousand 'if's' and 'but's' one can insert. It's the retention rate and returners and that's way above for the DC world.

A more mundane reason ... I have signed up two different times (when I built a new PC) and I have had 5 different devices, 3 decommissioned, one retired and then brought back ... so how many time does that count for user, hosts, devices, cores, etc. It just is not a simple question because there are so many people that the variety of things they could do to unitentionally mess up our stats is almost unimaginable.
Flying in the face of all the "more users" or "better computers" question is the undeniable results that Sekerob regularly presents in clear, unambiguos charts that show WCG continues to grow. Presently we are in the middle of the annual summer slow down but I am confident the numbers will soon start to improve and then within the next 6-8 weeks resume the the previous growth trend. |

We are still hovering under 300 years per day. If you choose mid-August for looking at those numbers you will always be disappointed, especially if you compare them to a good June or May. Now if you compare things comparable it is less distressing. Yesterday the 7-day and the 30-day indicators were showing an increase of 68.96 % and 72,46 % respectively over last year. We may consider that we should grow more and I am sure nobody would disagree, however, strictly answering your question, yes WCG is growing. And yes "we are still hovering under 300 years per day", but last year you shoud have written "we are still hovering under 200 years per day"! Keep hope, and find as many new members as you can. That's the key because there will always be members becoming inactive, that's a fact of life, and there must be more new members to compensate, always. Jean. |

Yes my current 7 year old PC only returns approx 1 unit / day. Though I am getting a new laptop next month, so should be a few more units / day. There are times of the year that some people / organisations will return less results (eg schools in holidays etc). If you check the boinc stats website, you can soon see how many "members" are not returning results. Patrick ![]() |
