Re: New Linux Box!

I'm running Kbuntu 64 bit on my main desktop and 32 bit Kbuntu on a small atom based NAS fileserver I built. I know next to nothing about linux and found Boinc extremely easy to set up on both by using synaptic and both run with excellent reliability.

An old machine ran Suse 9.1. I found installing BOINC on that to be a far, far, harder experience requiring hours of googling, reading, tinkering, and testing before I got it working right. sad

We are a Novell shop and are just moving to OES 2 (Suse 10x) from classic Netware. What a pain in the butt this distro is. I would much prefer Ubuntu or Redhat over Suse.

Re: New Linux Box!

If you have an init script to share that would be great! I've heard good things about opensuse 11 but never used it. I'll be using the 64-bit version since I'm running on AMDs Operton processor. Thanks a million for the information.

Dave

As soon as I see you in AIM, I will contact you. Think it is a bit too much to explain the whole procedure here in the forum. But if someone else is interested?

Micha

Re: New Linux Box!

Hi ziegenmelker,
Because your description can help others, I would recommend that you put the installation details on the WCG-wiki.
Cheers,
Yves

Re: New Linux Box!

Question to all Ubuntu users:

I'm crunching on Ubuntu with Boinc 6.2.18. In synaptic manager, that's the latest version. I've followed the instructions to install the newest version with terminal, but it's not working out for me. I can execute the files for linux 6.6.36, but it can't connect (only says disconnected in the bottom right of BOINC).

Any suggestions? I know this could go in the BOINC forum, but it seems that there is a bunch of knowledgeable people in this thread!

Thanks,

Nickoli

The version in Synaptic is the current stable version in the 9.04 repository. If your just crunching here at WCG there really is no reason to upgrade.

Re: New Linux Box!

I would sincerely appreciate seeing your script.... or other help. I have been crunching so long that I am on my third identity, having my computers die after crunching so long I forgot my logins biggrin Also, I have been using suse since 8.0 and am now crunching on 11.1 with 11.2 on a lab rat that also crunches when I have it turned on.

A few weeks ago, I upgraded to kde 4.3 and got a kernel upgrade. Ever since, I cannot run boinc manager. It will not connect to localhost. In the past, I fixed this with a reinstall. This time it didn't work. I'm using the beta 6.6.36 and up 'til now, it ran great.

So, if your script will help me get connected, please put it up somewhere.

Thanks.

Oh, as to suse vs. ubuntu..... I keep hearing all the ubuntu propaganda and I try it every other realease or so. You can see I'm still with suse. Hang out in the forums of each for awhile. That will make up your mind. shhh
