Continue the working unit after reinstall OS.

I installed BONIC manager in drive D and the data of BONIC is set in drive D too. But after I reinstalled windows, BONIC manager cannot recognize it's unfinished working units, even not after I logged in. It just downloaded some new working unit and start to calculate them= =... Does some know how to keep them after system reinstalltion? It's a waste of both my computer and the project :(

Hello farta,

Too late. It would have been troublesome to do and now that you have a new Data Directory full of new work, it is just easier to let it slide.

Sorry,
Lawrence

Thanks a lot. I guess so too lol

But is there some way to avoid this situation in the future if I reinstall system again? Maybe there is one?

Re: Continue the working unit after reinstall OS.

The easiest (and most reliable) method is to set World Community Grid to "No new tasks" in the Projects tab of BOINC Manager. Then allow the work in progress to complete before reinstalling the operating system.

Other methods are prone to failure.

Well, if you don't have a long-running CPDN-model, setting "no new work" and finishing your cache, possibly shortening it by aborting any unstarted work, is an easy solution.

Or, you can do:
1: Report any finished work.
2: Set "Network activity suspended."
3: Stop BOINC, make sure boinc.exe isn't running (check Task manager).
4: Backup the BOINC data-directory.
5: After re-installing OS or whatever...
6: Copy backup-copy of BOINC data-directory to wherever you wants it to be located.
7: Install BOINC, make sure you're selecting correct location of data-directory.
8: Check everything is OK, and enable network-activity again.

By doing step #6 before re-installing BOINC, you makes sure the permissions on the data-directory is correctly set.

As long as you're just re-installing same OS on same computer, my method should likely work.

If you're going to change OS, change cpu or something on the other hand, except for any CPDN-models, I would recommend to set "no new work", run-down the cache, can speed-up by aborting unstarted tasks, and report all work. Some projects uses "Homogeneous redundancy", so can screw-up the results if you change OS or cpu. Other projects uses cpu-specific application-code, so switching cpu maybe gives wrong result or much slower computing, so again isn't recommended to continue with same work.

Oh, and of course, switching from Windows to Linux or Mac or something won't work... cool

Thanks a lot for your replies~~

I think there won't be such a waste if I need to reinstall my OS again.

Re: Continue the working unit after reinstall OS.

v.v. point 2, unplugging the internet cable is optimal. In case the install does not find the restored data dir, with the WCG installer package you'd otherwise run chance the client manages to contact the server and identify as a new device. I've seen the data dir content vanishing completely and utterly smug
