I have had all my clents set to a work profile (having set it up to run only DDDT taks to chase after a badge). Now that those are winding down I have started switching them to a School profile (so they can chase after that badge). But not all of them are switching. I have stoped and started the service, reboted, For one it has been days and it still has not changed. what is the secret handshake?

None. If you confirmed the association of the devices to the profiles in the device manager and the clients communicated once to WCG they should pick it up and get work accordingly. In fact don't even think afa work selection is concerned, that any communication at all is required. BOINC clients only know of WCG, and use the profiles for settings. The science selection is never communicated.
----------------------------------------But, if your client is associated with an account manager such as BAM, or other projects outside WCG it might be a ritual you have to perform. That requires more than a just a secret handshake. Don't think it's the case though. Meantime, I want one of those school badges too. Which page can they be seen?

Can you paste the BOINC message log from one of your machines that appears to refuse to change, here - then, that may give some clues...

Can you paste the BOINC message log from one of your machines that appears to refuse to change, here - then, that may give some clues... Here is the log after I restarted the service this morning. (minus a lot of repetive attempts for more work) I changed this client to a school profile about 2 hours before this log entry starts. 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM||Starting BOINC client version 6.2.28 for windows_intelx86 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM||log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM||Libraries: libcurl/7.19.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8i zlib/1.2.3 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM||Running as a daemon 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM||Data directory: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM||Running under account boinc_master 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM||Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7700 @ 2.40GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 10] 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM||Processor features: fpu tsc pae nx sse sse2 mmx 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM||OS: Microsoft Windows XP: Professional x86 Editon, Service Pack 2, (05.01.2600.00) 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM||Memory: 1.99 GB physical, 3.84 GB virtual 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM||Disk: 148.98 GB total, 50.84 GB free 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM||Local time is UTC -5 hours 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM|World Community Grid|URL: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/; Computer ID: 470316; location: work; project prefs: work 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM||General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 23-Jul-2009 14:09:02) 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM||Computer location: work 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM||General prefs: using separate prefs for work 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM||Reading preferences override file 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM||Preferences limit memory usage when active to 1528.42MB 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM||Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 2037.90MB 8/3/2009 8:23:37 AM||Preferences limit disk usage to 0.93GB 8/3/2009 8:23:38 AM|World Community Grid|Task dddt1702o0797_100059_0 is 1.03 days overdue. 8/3/2009 8:23:38 AM|World Community Grid|You may not get credit for it. Soooo, did you confirm in the Device manager it shows school? I'm about to test this, as maybe a backlog in the message processing server could be holding it up.

Consider aborting it. Fortunately once WCG upgrades to the latest client (6.10 more probably once out), overdue jobs will automatically be booted as a copy has already been submitted for rush processing, yours thus redundant.

I was not too conserned about the redundant job since my maching is otherwise idle.

Test shows: Not sure if it's a message server backlog, a client issue refusing to change, or a bug. edit: This client is the same WCG recommended 6.2.28 Not sure if it is related but .... I went ahead and changed all machines to a different profile to to see if I could find any trends. I have 14 machines and 4 of those had late work in the last few days. I have 3 machines not switching and 2 of them are of the 4 with recent late work, the 3rd is my only Linux system -Jasm

Not sure if it's a message server backlog, a client issue refusing to change, or a bug. edit: This client is the same WCG recommended 6.2.28 Doing a couple quick tests, this isn't a client-bug, but a WCG server-bug. Test 1: Change WCG-computer from "Work" to "Home". Scheduler-reply shows: <host_venue>work</host_venue> BOINC-log (this is v5.10.45, but doesn't really matter since server tells wrong info): 03.08.2009 18:38:53|World Community Grid|[sched_op_debug] Starting scheduler request 03.08.2009 18:38:53|World Community Grid|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. (re-reads preferences, to see which venue it's set to) 03.08.2009 18:39:15||General prefs: from SETI@home (last modified 23-Jul-2009 01:52:56) 03.08.2009 18:39:15||Host location: work 03.08.2009 18:39:15||General prefs: using separate prefs for work 03.08.2009 18:39:15||Reading preferences override file (snip) Test 2: Change SETI@home-comuter from "work" to "home": Scheduler-reply shows: <host_venue>home</host_venue> BOINC-log shows: 03.08.2009 18:42:29|SETI@home|[sched_op_debug] Starting scheduler request 03.08.2009 18:42:29|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks 03.08.2009 18:42:34|SETI@home|Scheduler request succeeded: got 0 new tasks 03.08.2009 18:42:34|SETI@home|[sched_ops_debug] Server version 607 03.08.2009 18:42:34|SETI@home|Project requested delay of 11.000000 seconds 03.08.2009 18:42:34|SETI@home|New host venue: home 03.08.2009 18:42:34||General prefs: from SETI@home (last modified 23-Jul-2009 01:52:56) 03.08.2009 18:42:34||Host location: home 03.08.2009 18:42:34||General prefs: using separate prefs for home 03.08.2009 18:42:34||Reading preferences override file (snip). So, clearly, this is either due to WCG running old scheduling-server, or, for having a bug in their web-code. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. Thank you for reporting this issue. We have found a problem that was causing some of these updates to fail. We are working on the issue now.
