I was going to snip some of the above, but it was taking too much time. (Honestly, I'm not trying to start another "how deep can we nest quotes" experiment. )Hyper-threading was designed to give the processor something to do while it's waiting for memory access. Waiting for I/O takes so long (to the processor) that the operating system simply task switches if possible. On today's processors, the time it takes the processor to fetch from or store to memory past the on-chip cache is much greater than the time to access the cache. To give the processor something to do besides just wait for a response from the memory controller, the processor will dispatch another instruction stream. This would be very difficult for the operating system to do, so the the processor chip reports that it has more processors than it really does to simplify things for the operating system. The hyperthreading implementation on the i7 is much better than on the older pentium processors. I have a Pentium D on one of my systems and HT for two WUs only shows about at 15% gain compared to running just a single WU.... but the processor runs much hotter and uses much more power so I've limited BOINC to just a single WU on that system. I've seen numbers around 30% improvement in total throughput for the i7 hyperthreading implementation and some have claimed to see even more. That certainly could be the case for something that had a large working set in memory. I would expect that hyperthreading would also lead to over-claiming credits because more CPU time is accumulated for a thread when it may not really be running. I definitely saw that with my limited experiments. So getting back to the original point, as far as BOINC type crunching is concerned a comparable speed i7 is probably a better deal than an i5 when you add up the costs. i5 processors can be though of as new and improved core 2 quads. - D You'd have a long ways to go on the "how deep" test! Nice info though!!! |

Mike, I haven't checked HP yet to see what they have to offer. You have to just commit and take the jump when you buy a computer. You'll always find something better if you wait simply because the technology keeps moving ahead. It's similar to choosing a car. You decide which characteristics are really important to you and you see what the best option is that satisfies those. You may get a few nice to haves but you get what you decide matters to you at that time. Generally, the important parts are are cpu, memory, and video for a cruncher. Everyone looks to be providing free upgrades to WIN7 on any Vista machines now. As for CPU, decide if you want the i7 or a quad. Memory, you want at least 2-3GB but you can't use over 4GB without goping 64bit on the OS so paying for more could be a waste. Memory has a speed just like the CPU and, generally, faster is better. However, there's a point where the cost for the increase in speed isn't worth the incremental cost. Most machines seem to come with 250-500GB hard drives and that's not a big factor for a cruncher so get the base or upgrade to that point that doesn't cross the point of declining return. I saw a fair variety of nVidia cards so you may want to get ahold of a ranking of the best ones to have. If you get the card pre-configured with the machine, you should get a power supply that's adequate. Most everyone also has an option to buy on time. Some give you 6-12 months with no interest so if you can pay for it in that time frame, that's a good deal if it's a bit more money than you have now. If you're a bit uncomfortable going thru the online sites yourself, call their sales numbers and get their recommendation. You can always get second opinions here. Eventually, you just have to fish or cut bait.

Actually I was talking about the I7 860. Dell drags their feet for a few months on new processors. I don't understand why as they are masters at keeping incoming componet inventory low..I suppose it has to do with contracts for components.
----------------------------------------I would wait 60-90 days and look for a studio XPS with a I7 860 processor. (That is my plan) You can get an XPS Studio today with a 920 for around $900 or less IIRC. I have one of those running WCG. EDIT>> I am just guessing but probably the difference in what KH quoted and what I guessed is the video card and the memory size. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by RT at Sep 11, 2009 3:19:46 PM] |

It's been another couple of hot days here -- almost 100F both days. I've had to throttle back one of my systems and suspend GPU processing again. This is getting real annoying... I've missed a couple of deadlines at GPUGRID between the heat and the GPU system not being on 24/7... my credits have flatlined for the time being
It's supposed to cool off starting tomorrow. - D |
