Suspend BOINC while VNC, RDP, or LogMeIn is running..?

I have many machines on my network that I am slowly installling BOINC/WCG on. I have my global preferences set to run BOINC at full power when the systems are idle, and to stop & unload when there is user activity.

But...

What about remote control programs like VNC..?

We use three different remote control programs, based on user preference: VNC, Windows Remote Desktop, and LogMeIn. I've found that when I remote in to a machine, BOINC does not sense the activity and stop & unload. No amount of clicking around with the mouse and keyboard via remote control will trigger BOINC to stop.

Is there a way to make it do this..?

I've noted that the screen saver stops in response to remote control activity... Is there a way to make BOINC respond to the same signal from Windows..?

1130 work units in 21 days, and more to come...! *IF* I can hide the BOINC client a little better from my nosey users...!! biggrin

Thanks.

Re: Suspend BOINC while VNC, RDP, or LogMeIn is running..?

Hello Red Zebra Broadcasting,
I do not know everything but I think this is not possible. Is this really needed? BOINC is an extremely low priority program. Unless you are running a real time program needing massive resources, BOINC should not interfere. (Yes, there are always strange combinations of software that are bothered by BOINC.)

If starting of Remote Desktop and so on starts a new process with a different name than any other process then you logs-in remotely and process exits then terminates connection, you can use BOINC's <exclusive_app> -option, and add whatever this process is called to the cc_config.xml-file, see http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration

For this to work, you'll need to run BOINC-client v6.3.13 or later.

Also, you'll need the name of a process that only runs then logged-in remotely. For Windows Remote Desktop, one process that seems you can use is rdpclip.exe, since a quick test revealed logging on/off and on again gave this a different process-id.

May I suggest to set the Activity menu option to run based on preferences and it will work! Does so on my part of planet with LogMeIn.
