rose Some comments from a "newbie"

I've installed WCG-BOINC on my computer two days ago, and as I'm the systems administrator for two offices, I've also picked a few low profile machines that are on a lot sitting idle that I've installed it on.

These machines produce a lot of fan noise when they're running at 100% CPU, so I'm using the default 60% on them to keep the noise down. I would love to have the ability to configure them to run at 60% Mondays through Fridays 8AM - 6PM, and 100% at other times, to get the maximum utility out of them without affecting the work environment.

I would also like to be able to create more custom profiles and customize their names too. That way I could create separate profiles for users' machines (run only when idle, at 60%), servers (always on, 60%) and no-limit (always on, 100%) for machines where availability, cooling and noise are no issue.

Another peeve is that the results status is not very up to date. This is probably done to prevent people refreshing the Results page continuously to see their latest work pop up so you probably shouldn't improve this ;)

Ah, and then there's a sorting issue on the results status page too. When you sort on a certain column and then go to another page, the sorting resets to default and you have to click on the desired column again to sort it properly. This could be a browser related bug too: I'm using Google Chrome...

Aside from these minor peeves, great stuff!

You may want to take this us at the BOINC web site, since they develop the software. http://boinc.berkeley.edu/

First, on the results status page, the sorting resetting is a problem I reported quite a while back. However, there's an easy way around it. Bring up the results status page, sort it as you want and, to go to another page, rather than clicking on the numbers by where it says page, go up to the url in the address bar and look for &pagenum=x (it usually is at the end) and change x to the page number you want. That will go to that page with the same sorting.

As for the results status page not being current, I haven't seen that. If you are referring to work you've returned that doesn't have points yet, it probably has a status of Pending Validation which basically means that the validator tasks hasn't gotten to it yet (it normally will within a few hours if not much sooner) or there is one or more other user that need to return that result before it can validate and be awarded points. You should be able to find more on validation and quorums in the FAQ.

BOINC only allows for the three different profiles so, yes, you should ask about that on the BOINC site. However, it's been that way a long time and I doubt that would get changed. What I would suggest is that you set your default profile to run at 60% when idle time as that is your most restrictive case. Set that through the website here at WCG and assign that profile to each device (machine) you have via the website as well. Now go to the machines that you want to run at 60% always (servers) and click on Advanced-Preferences in BOINC Manager on each of those machines and set them to rum that way. That will override your default profile on just those machines. Do the same sort of thing on your machines you want running 100%. That way, if those preferences that are specific to a machine get cleared by mistake, the machine will revert to the lowest impact setting (60% when idle). Should one of your unused machines (running 100%) be needed for a worker, simply clear the preferences on it and it will run with your standard default.

You can also do with the three additional profiles available and keep a note for yourself that (for example)
- Work is for the no-limit machines
- School is for servers
- Home is for users' machines.

I agree it was a little childish to force such specific names for these three extra profiles, but it is still manageable, I think. smile

This is a long-standing known bug. It was reported in October 2008. It is not browser-specific.

Re: Some comments from a "newbie"

Note that the 60% feature within BOINC is rather crude.

Rather than trying to keep the science apps use 60% of the cpu continuously, rather it alternates between 100% & 0% to achieve the set percentage (eg 3 second on, 2 second off for 60%) I'm not sure how this works for you but in my case I hear my fan move along with this rithm, which is annoying :)

There is an external program that does a much better job: TThrottle This program automatically detects the Boinc science processes and tunes their processor usage to keep a stable temperature, and thus fanspeed.

While I agree such functionality should exist in BOINC itself I'm not gonna hold my breath. It's not without reason someone build a program that does this and autodetects Boinc... biggrin

I don't think TThrottle supports the scheme though where you would use different settings following a time schedule. You could suggest it though as it is actively being developed.

No don't hold breath for integration into the core client. I've scripted using 2 override files and read them in, which runs according the OS's scheduler. A number of people have asked for multiple time segments of a day and alternation of use of different resources during use and idle. Now it's either on or off. The fan noise during daytime an excellent example why multiple configs during day parts is needed.

Yes do post on the developers forum. The more do, the more chance it's heard, though there's quick repeating, that the developers don't read those forums... put it thus well formulated and argued into Trac with a ticket.

One thing you might do is set up different accounts/member names, member1, member2 etc. This would give you 4 different profiles for each user (don't forget the default profile). One name could be for user machines, one for servers, etc. Just a thought.

Cheers

the problem with this of corse if you are wanting badges this will cut your bagde hunting down cause it will see you as mulitple members..

myself im a badge hunter as well as a cruncher.. if there wernt badges here i would probaly be working on alot of projects instead of concentrating on this one (90% share or greater)

i do have one advantage over most of you with hearing fan noise...

i have lost about 80% of my hearing so i just dont hear the fan unless its bearings are going bad and not always then... (got to take the little bonuses with every negitive in your life)

yes i would just recomend trying to use the given 3 we have to work with .. if you need more and dont care about badges and such then yes Sgt,Joe's idea would work nicely too.

Re: Some comments from a "newbie"

For the results not being up to date: is something like this what you mean?

Project Name: The Clean Energy Project
    Created: 27-7-09
    Name: E000889_523C_009p0530h
    Minimum Quorum: 2
    Replication: 2

Result Name App Version Number Status Sent Time Time Due / Return Time CPU Time (hours) Claimed/ Granted BOINC Credit
    E000889_ 523C_ 009p0530h_ 0-- 632 Pending Validation 28-7-09 06:40:13 28-7-09 23:59:12 4.53 111.2 / 0.0
    E000889_ 523C_ 009p0530h_ 1-- 632 Pending Validation 28-7-09 06:37:28 29-7-09 08:02:14 11.87 109.7 / 0.0

I'll just have to wait for the validator to pass by... somewhere soon probably.
