Looks like I will hit 1 Billion points tonight! Maybe there will be some GPU's under the Tree for us to share too... Happy Holidays to All! MrKermit ![]() Happy Holidays to you also. ![]() ![]() |

Well done on your milestones. I'm sitting fairly still at 670 for pts.
MrKermit, do you literally mean a few? |

skgiven, we haven't determined what will be useful for our customers, but there's enough traction that we will probably put in a small (by our definition) cluster of GPU enabled systems. This could be as many as 16 GPU's on 4 dual socket servers depending on the form factor and PCI connection options.
----------------------------------------In this case we don't have a specific customer who is beating down the door for them, it would be more to make it available and see who's up for test drives, so it won't be very big. Still, I have one machine with an old Quadro card that is quite a cruncher; 16 would be an eye opener! Cheers! MrKermit ![]() |

Just slipped inside the top 700 overnight (699) for results returned.
----------------------------------------Should make 40years runtime by tonights stats update ![]() MrKermit, High end GPU's are virtually all PCIE, and most are double slot width. It would be important to check the server space/card dimensions, PSU requirements and ventilation. While most GPU projects could handle an additional 16 cards when they are up and running, MW had no tasks when I checked yesterday and Seti has had task availability problems since introducing GPUs. Einstein does not make good use of the GPU; a waste of a top GPU. The maths projects are somewhat intermittent. GPUGrid (molecular modelling of interactions, pathways; presently doing lots on HIV) has good uptime as does Folding (a non-Boinc project that folds proteins to find their tertiary and quaternary molecular confirmations). The Maths projects mostly utilize ATI cards better, Folding is mixed and GPUGrid only uses NVidia cards (cuda). 16 GTX580's would get through plenty of work; between 1.5M and 2M Boinc credits per day in a useful project, and be significantly more energy efficient/credit than CPUs. Should you ever add a zero to that number of cards you might reduce task availability to other crunchers, so I would suggest contacting the project first and let them know what you are planning. I know some would be happy to facilitate your contribution (top up the server tasks to send total by adding a project). Some projects have to control the total tasks waiting to be sent; the next batch of tasks are built on existing tasks (low cache requirements), but 16 cards should be fine. Good luck, - 40:007:20:13:05 (#754) :) [Edit 2 times, last edit by skgiven at Dec 24, 2010 11:30:15 AM] |
