I am opening this thread due to a recommendation by Sekerob. I have used wireless with my work computer at both work and at home, but when I try to go wireless at home with a computer that has never been connected to the internet, I have not been able to. I am using an AT&T router at this time to use DSL. When you read through the online information, you would expect to be able to set up a flash drive to do this connection, but I have not had any luck; and as the system is a tower, I cannot exactly take it to Starbucks to see if it will work. There is obviously something I am doing wrong, but I do not know what it is. I am about to follow what Sekerob says below.
Now Wifi, I think you landed in the wrong thread. Suggest to open a new one with fitting title, so it does not get lost. Here's a link to a site that helps configure for hundreds of routers/adsl modems and all http://www.portforward.com/ but you need to get the protocol information from the ISP first. Mine is PPPoE/PPPoA LLC/ Snap-Bridging which applies to most DSL users, says the manual. Most parts are usually pre-filled already. Best is you first set up with ethernet cable connected, then start working on activating the wifi from the computer, first without encryption as that's the finicky part. When it's working, disconnect the cable to see if things continue, so you'll need 2 IP addresses. Anyway, open a new thread and surely an experience WIFI cruncher is able to help out. This forum is fine for that. |

You need to know how your router is configured. You need the SSID and security information.
If you haven't configured the router, then you need to connect using a cable or using the default router settings. If you don't know the router settings, then you should reset it to the factory settings before you begin. Once you can connect to the router, you can set up DSL. Most routers can do this automatically, and all you need is the DSL username and password supplied by your ISP. I'm sure you will have more questions. Ask away! |

Didactylos,
----------------------------------------Thank you for the invitation to ask away if I have more questions, and I do. I went to PortForward.com and I see a list of routers of which I have 2wire 2701HG-B. PortForward is selling PFConfig. Would you recommend getting PFConfig? You say Once you can connect to the router, you can set up DSL. Most routers can do this automatically, and all you need is the DSL username and password supplied by your ISP. Where do I get DSL username and password? My next main question has to do with making the DSL connection. I would not think I would have to connect directly before going wireless since I can take a laptop to Starbucks or McDonalds and connect as I have seen many others do. Is this correct or am I missing something. Finally, what books, manuals, or other information would you suggest I read to get up to speed on connecting wireless. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, dkt [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 19, 2009 4:40:44 PM] |

If your work laptop can connect to your home wireless router, go to copy those settings down. DHCP, DNS, IP, SSID, Router MAC any security settings. Sounds that your wifi router is not secured, so the neighbours could be enjoying a free ride. Best level is WPA2-PSK encryption... 256 bit (on mine).
----------------------------------------By connecting with hardwire ethernet and opening the admin page of the router, usually an address like http://192.168.100.1 or similar, you can find out what the SSID etc. is. Default admin password is usual same as the admin name, so change that when done. A router/modem reset will reset the password too. As yet, nothing you need to buy. Many free tools available. Got tools like DMT and Network Stumbler will tell what the SSID is for instance (if not hidden, which is not advised btw).

Direct connection is needed for configuring the router (until you are able to link to it via WiFi), not the laptop.
----------------------------------------At the places you mention this initial configuration step has already been done. Jean. |

My laptop is very secure and the company has a special setup for getting to the intranet. I have looked at that information and have not been able to see how to relate it to the tower that does not have any security yet. As for the neighbors, the area where I live has 2.5 acre parcels and there is no danger of neighbors using the router.
I will try what you say, and the programs or tools you mention I should be able to find on Google. I really wanted to get pointed to the information I need to be able to set up wireless at any time. Thanks |

Jean. Jean, I am connected to the router directly by my tower system with which I do most of my non-work processing. And I have tried setting up the router with that system using Windows Vista and copying the result to a flash drive. Yet I am still not able to connect. |

Fine, then you can use your tower system to try any advice that Didactylos or Sekerob will give you to make sure that your router is set correctly for WiFi connections. Working on the laptop will be necessary only for adjusting its security parameters to those of your router since this laptop seems to be already able to use its WiFi at other places. Cheers. Jean. |

dkt, the default connection information should be printed somewhere on the router.
According to the manual, your router is the most difficult to set up I have ever seen. It has encryption enabled by default, and you must use the key printed on the router to connect the first time. The manual is here: http://www.2wire.com/pages/pdfs/2701_installation_guide.pdf Let's start at the beginning. 1. Check everything is plugged in correctly, and the router is turned on. 2. In Windows Vista, search for wifi networks. You want the one starting with 2WIRE. Try to connect to it. It will ask for the WEP encryption key. Type in the number in brackets (below the barcode) on your router. Check the picture in the manual if you're not sure. That should get the connection between you and the router working. Please let me know how it goes. |

I should add: if you have already set up the router using your tower system, and you have a working Internet connection on your tower, then you do not need to use the setup CD on the laptop. My instructions above should be all you need.
