i noticed the costs have come down a lot, example:

Re: DNA testing: too soon to be practical?

My favourite is Genographics project.

It was the pioneer in this search, and all that came before use it basisi to determine origins. But not about health.

I believe that DNA testing could help many couples with yours deciions about kids. It is the real world and we are living with this kind of choices for years now (determine sex and severe diseases, and so on...).

I don't know what kind of duties we will have in the future to take decisions based on DNA testing, maybe transform the human being in a distibnct way of mutation and so on.

But really this tests could help a lot of people with a lot of things. peace coffee

While I agree with your assessment, it should be realized there are some rather profound ethical consequences to the behavior you postulate.

Wasn't it Hitler who wanted to create the "Master Race?"

Do you think for a second the Vatican would tolerate let alone condone exploration in this vein?

As an example, consider the ethical ramifications relating to working with stem cells.

Now, I'm certainly not attempting to create anything of a sensational aspect via my response, but these observations along with likely a million others I've not even begun to consider are certain to pose some prickly problems. Especially when any collective geography might consider experimentation in this area perfectly reasonable and rational and another group would consider it at best blasphemous.

We as a global society seem to either be unwilling or incapable of tolerating societies practicing any form of spiritual affiliation without repercussions from other groups.

Until some of the other aspects of the sociopolitical / ethical / religious aspects of this whole ball of wax can be agreed to at a global level, I doubt these kinds of technological advances are in the offing any time soon.

But it's fun to dream about the potential realization of such possibilities.

Re: DNA testing: too soon to be practical?

Widening the discussion to general health tests, it is felt by many experts that unnecessary health screening does more harm than good.

If there's nothing wrong with you, why go looking? Obviously, this doesn't apply to all diseases - but there is a point where screening becomes useless. And when there's a private company trying to push the scans, caution is advisable.
