I'm currently proposing a project to implement WCG in the company I work for. We have over 6000+ workstations that it could be run on. I'm looking at the mass deployment article and went to Berkeley's download site. I'm only seeing a mass deployment file package for version 5.10.45. Is there not onw for 6.2.28?

Tell me about it! That's why I'm pushing for it. I'm hoping that they have a 6.2.28 mass installer so that I can mass install these agents as services and not screensavers. And more than half of those computers are dual cores. I don't believe we have any quad core workstations though.

No, not that I'm aware and probably not even suited. 6,000... suggest you hop on that mail horse and speak to the techs directly at support@worldcommunitygrid.org. They'll smother you with attention.

Thanks Sek, I just sent an email to them.
Why wouldn't 6.2.28 be suited for mass deployment? My main concern is I would highly prefer BOINC to run as a service instead of a screen saver. |

I did not read the document thoroughly, just scanned for protected and service, latter word missing. Also the screensaver gets more emphasis... well you would not want that as corporations have their own very often. But, 5.10.45 can be installed as service manually, so why not / how still in mass roll out is something to discover.

Exactly, I work for a large grocery store chain out of Florida. Our mandatory screensaver is a picture slide show of some of the more unique locations we've built in the past...including the very first store from 1929.

Knight, i have sent you some information about mass install via email. But for others who are concerned, please look at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Creating_custom_installers as it shows some options for both the v6 and v5 client. V6 has the new protected user account for sandboxing which is not included in the v5 client.

Thanks Uplinger. I just sent you an email back asking a quick question. Everyone keep their fingers crossed over the next couple of months (yes you can stretch them out if cramping but get back to crossing immediately!) that I can get this pushed through. A huge benefit is WCG did most of the work for me (us) as far as being able to automate it pretty easily for mass deployment.

A huge benefit is WCG did most of the work for me (us) as far as being able to automate it pretty easily for mass deployment. I proposed this at my work, a little over 10,000 pc's, and they decided to go the shutdown the pc at night way instead. They are spending $40.00 initially, PER PC, for a program that shuts down the pc at night and then restarts it in the morning! Each pc is projected to save about $3.00 per month and the program costs $40.00 per year! The license is only good for that one pc and the pc's are replaced every 4 to 5 years. There is an ongoing license fee per year too! The 'company', NO not THAT company, thinks they will save the money in power generation, not electricity costs per pc. I really tried guys, they just said no! ![]() ![]() |
