master list of unsolved problems

seems to me many crunching problems that came up were 'worked around' or avoided after being discovered (which is good); but without any final determination of the causes or solutions.

i was thinking it might be good to have a list of all these for future reference.

Re: master list of unsolved problems

Nay, not going to ask the techs to add another subset-list to a list of known issues, but... I'm a volunteer here spending many hours. Now I invite you to come join a few hours a week and make that list and maintain it. There's a wiki to host it, so anyone can add items/update... sort of a WCG trac. Some of the most persistent and cruncher annoying have been captured in the Start Here FAQ's, with workarounds inclusive, so think that's a good departure point to fill this need... then do an inventory of these items.

Are you game?

Re: master list of unsolved problems

well, my thoughts were more about certain problem work units in the past that did not seem to process well, regardless of which computer they were on.

if there is a permanent list of 'known issues' including these, that would be good. of course i do understand different computers had different problems.

Re: master list of unsolved problems

yes there are lots of unsolved or work arounds to problems ..

what i think "Sekerob" was saying though it he spends lots of his own time keeping us up to date with the faq and such he all dose (many thanks btw)

and he i believe asked that if you want to see a list then you are going to have to go through the FAQ and then look for the stuff yourself cause he dosnt have the time/energy to donate to do this as well

Sekerob is doing a great job on these faq and answering the questions

i honsetly wish i had the time to do even 1/100 of what he puts in.

i agree it would be nice but i normaly only have 1 hour (interspersed thorught the day) to have a chance to read and post here. i wish i could help but i dont have the time to help... but my computers do and they provide 5 CPU's of processing power to BOINC and WCG

happy Crunching

Re: master list of unsolved problems

It is true that many issues raised here aren't formally resolved. In some cases, we can be absolutely confident about the problem, whether the reporter gets back to us or not.

But in many cases of work unit failure, we have no means of determining the actual cause of failure. We are grateful to the few members who work with the staff or CAs to determine as closely as possible the exact cause of a failure, but this is impossible to do for every single failure, and doesn't always result in a definite reason.

I think halfcard is thinking in the direction of a database, one that allows correlating failures with particular operating systems or processors, and searching different types of failure.

Of course, the definitive database is held on the World Community Grid servers. The techs can and do query it to determine the source of problems. But they don't have the time or resources to worry about the little stuff.

Could we have a community maintained database to track the rare stuff? Absolutely. All we need is the will.

We can use the wiki to document identified problems, but actually tracking lots of work units will need a database or spreadsheet. Google docs allows collaborative working.

The English wiki now has 89 articles
http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/

The Deutsches wiki has 17 articles (and is growing fast)
http://de.wcg.wikia.com/wiki/

The EspaƱol wiki has made a good start with 7 articles
http://es.wcg.wikia.com/wiki/

More languages can be added.
